The Hoatzin is the national bird of Guyana.

According to the mapcrow website the distance from the capital cities of Hartford, Connecticut, USA and Georgetown, Guyana in a straight line is 4,140 km or 2,573 miles.

I've seen estimates ranging from like 130,000 to 310,000. The differences may be due to poor estimates or the difficultly of making estimates, since the last census was in 2002. It may be due to what exactly is Georgetown (where does it end?), since some may stop their count at the city limits, whilst others may look to the Greater Georgetown area. Dispite all the obsure information that can be found on the offical Guyan census site (http://www.statisticsguyana.gov.gy), I cannot seem to find a simple population count by city. Guyana is a multi-ethnic society. There are Amerindians, East Indians, Africans, Europeans, Portuguese, Chinese & Mixed people :)

Guyana is more affected because it is within the ITCZ zone, 10- 12 degrees North of the Equator, St Lucia is just outside that area at 13 degrees North, So Guyana will feel the full brunt of the ITCZ than St Lucia

The two main ethnic groups in Guyana are Afro-Guyanese (descendants of slaves) and Indo-Guyanese (descendants of immigrants from India who came to work as indentured laborers on the sugar and rice plantations after slavery was abolished.

Guyana was discovered in 1498 by the Europeans, its history; therefore stretches back a bit more than 500 years!. Guyana's past is punctuated by battles fought and won, possessions lost and regained as the Spanish, French, Dutch and British wrangled for centuries to own this land.

Some problems faced by the farmers are:

1. Crop infestations

2. Pests and diseases

3. Massive loss of crop and animal (Eg. Theft)

4. Natural disasters (Eg. Flooding)

5. Small size making it hard to get the best terms of sale for crops

6. Transport of produce

7. Limited land area and uncertain weather

8. Limited access to capital (Money) for improvements.

They use simple agricultural products to help the plants grow and prevent these problems from occurring. Most of today's farmers are peasant farmers. It provides a wider scale for agriculture without the need to pay taxes or suffer bankruptcy and losses by the hands of others.

I believe there is an extradition treaty between the two countries, but whether it is enforced or not, is another question.

The Kaieteur falls is located in Guyana and is called the Majestic Wonders. It is one of the most prominent tourism sites in the country.
