You are thinking of Hamster Glaucoma. Glaucoma affects the eyes of the hamster and its symptoms are that the hamster's eye will appear larger. When Glaucoma takes place, there is an increased amount of fluid within the eyeball which will lead to loss of vision. The affected hamster will rub the eye and the eye may become so big that it prolapses from the socket.

Hamster Glaucoma can be a result of rough handling, fighting or from being held too tightly from the scruff. To decrease the chance of hamster glaucoma, avoid holding the hamster from the scruff. Hamsters naturally have big eyeballs to be able to spot predators and Glaucoma should not be misinterpreted by this. See picture on the right for a hamster who has Glaucoma.

Unfortunately there is no specific treatment for hamster glaucoma and early referral to a vet is important as the vet can prescribe painkillers if the hamster is in a lot of pain. As earlier outlined, Glaucoma may lead to loss of the hamster's vision, but this is not a big problem as a hamster's eye sight is very poor. Affected hamsters should not be used for breeding. An eye ointment prescribed by a good vet may be used several times daily to keep the hamster's eye moist.

The average pregnancy for most hamster species is 16-23 days. Gestation lasts 16 to 18 days for Syrian hamsters, 18 to 21 days for Russian hamsters, 21 to 23 days for Chinese hamsters and 23 to 30 for Roborovski hamsters.

It is often difficult to determine pregnancy merely by looking at the hamster, at least until the last two or three days. Some signs include careful cleaning of her teats, and storing up food piles in her nest. When her condition becomes obvious, you probably have less than two weeks to wait.

Weaning is when the young hamsters completely stop using the milk of the mother, the weaning process begins when the hamsters start eating other foods, though also keep drinking the mother's milk. They are completely weaned when the rely on other food and not the mother. This is also usually the point where the hamsters can leave the mother and go to new homes.

Well it depends on the type of hamster. I have a syrian baby hamster and if it is laying down it is about 9cm long and 4cm tall. I can't tell for dwarf hamster babies though because they are much smaller. As well as the breed it can also depend whether it is the runt of the litter, or the dominant baby of the litter and so on.

The most popular breeds of hamsters are dwarfs, Chinese, and Teddy Bear (Syrian)/Golden) hamsters. I wouldn't be able to tell what breed of hamster you have without seeing it. But I can give a description of each one. There are many types of dwarf hamsters including the Campbell's Dwarf Hamster, Russian Dwarf Hamster and Roborovski Hamster. They are the smallest of the hamsters with the Robo(rovski) measuring just 2 inches when fully grown, their colors range from white to dark gray and often have a darker dorsal stripe. The Chinese hamster compared to other hamsters has a longer tail (around 2cm) and a thinner longer body, their natural coat is browny grey with a dorsal stripe but other color variations are available. Finally the Syrian hamster is much bigger than Chinese and Dwarves and their coat is commonly a 'golden' brown. They can grow to around 7 inches when fully mature. Hamsters do not have a long life spand,they will only live 2 to 4 years.

contact the store, ask for them to pay for the expenses spent on the pregnancy, if she has not given birth yet you may even consider returning her if you do not want to deal with the pregnancy.

I take my hamster out side all the time and she is fine. Just make sure it dose not eat anything.

You must get her to get used to your smell by putting your hand in the cage and letting her smell it. You can play whither her/him when she starts responding to your hand in a good way and give her/him some treats but not too much so that she/he won't become obese. if she bites you the first time you should keep her in its cage in your room for a couple of days. after a couple of days try again and if she bites again try doing it everyday a little until she is used to you.
