According to my kids pediatrician, Vaseline is a non-pesticide treatment for head lice. If you coat your whole scalp in Vaseline at night before you go to bed they will be dead in the morning. They recommended wearing a shower cap to bed and using concentrated dish detergent to get the Vaseline out the next morning. It does not kill the eggs which can take up to 10 days to hatch so unless you remove them all, you will have to retreat. Lice do not lay eggs for the first 10 days of their lives so as long as you retreat every few days for up to 10 days you should be able to successfully radicate the head lice. I tried it, and although it took me much longer than 10 days to get all of the Vaseline out of my kids hair, it worked wonders!!!

Yes it can work. I strongly recommend using a different method. We had used this and it took A dozen washes to get it all out.

There are several "sprays" that color that Nits (eggs) that a louse singular for lice) which make it easier to remove them. However, there is no scientific proof that spray a pesticide throughout your home, will help. the National Pedculocious (SP) Association, recommends vacuuming what you can, placing other none washables in a plastic bag for 2 weeks of in a hot dryer for 20 minutes, boiling brushing and MOST IMPORTANTLY removing all the nits.

Permethrin is by many the recommended treatment for headlice.

There have however been reported of some lice that seem to be resistant to permethrine.

In such cases one can try to mix 5-10 drops of Teatree oil in your hand together with your preferred shampoo and then wash your hear thoroughly. Wait 5 min before rinsing.

Teatree oil is supposed to kill off both the lice and its eggs, but I would recomend a second treatment after 6-7 days to be sure.

When mixing with shampoo you should not use diluted oil. it dilutes into the shampoo.

There are other chemicals around that also kill of headlice. Malathione is one.

Pharmasists can help you get shampoo or cream containing about 0.5% Malathione.

Another aspect is that if you don't get rid of the source of the lice, you will soon have them back again.

In a school, it is important that all that have lice are treated at the same time, and preferably on a Friday after school.

People telling you to not use it are being legalistic. If you look at the ingredients of Rid, they are the same as flea and tick shampoos. They don't have the FDA certification so they say not to use it. Look at all the horse shampoos and hoof treatments that humans use all the time. If I already had the flea shampoo I would use it and asap.

Lice cannot survive off the human head for more than 24-36 hours (they need the warmth and blood to survive). So there is a possibility that within that time period they can be on your pillows, head rest, couch, car seat or chair, combs, hair brush, jacket etc.

Use Fairytales L/I conditioning Spray on all of the items mentioned above it can be sprayed on your child's hair every morning before school and on his/her backpack, clothing, etc. You can also spray it on bedding or any material thing. This stuff works I use it on my children's hair everyday.

There shouldn't be any adverse effects to you as the user. The fact that it's expired simply means that it will likely be less effective as a lice killer or control.

That said, you probably shouldn't use it. For the simple reason that, like the old adage that says, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger," the lower efficacy of the expired product may allow some of the lice to, not only survive, but become resistant to the shampoo. Once they become resistant to it, the full strength shampoo will be less effective at controlling the resistant lice as well.

Take the expired shampoo back to your local pharmacy for disposal.
