Do hermit crabs eat there dead?

i dont think that they do because i have a pet hermit crab and another died and they didn't eat each other because they qot on quite well!

Not very often will a hermit crab eat one of its companions. However, if that hermit crab is lacking nutrients in his diet they are more prone to become cannibalistic. One must feed a well balanced diet as well as plenty of protein and chitin. Most chitin sources are protein, but not all protein sources contain chitin.

What are the predators and enemies of a hermit crab?

Hermit crabs have very few natural enemies and are in the most danger of being attacked by other hermit crabs. There are a few predators of marine hermit crabs, like squid and octopus who can crack the shells in their beaks. But for the majority of land hermit crabs, they are fairly safe.

How do hermit crabs hunt their food?

some put a enineme (spongy animal that looks like a plant) and move around, this animal stings other fish that come to the hermit crab. the sponge thing get food and the hermit crab can get protected. I really wanted to say that but the crab uses it's shell for camoflouge while it sneaks up and eats stuff.

How do you take care of hermit crab larvae?

There are three possible answers here depending on the kind of crab.

1. If you purchased them at a boardwalk store then bring them home and follow the care guidelines outlined on www.crabstreetjournal.com

2. If you took land hermit crabs off the beach you can care for them much the same way but please know that personally harvesting land hermit crabs is illegal without a permit.

3. If you accidentally took marine hermit crabs out of the tide pools they need a very careful slat water setup, complete with live rock or else they will die.

Do hermit crabs like to eat potatos?

Yes, but only if you pop it in a pure oil like olive oil on the stove. No butter or salt. Human grade salt is not safe for them (because of the anti-caking agents and chemicals) and there are chemicals in microwave popcorn as well.

Hermit crabs need both dechlorinated fresh water and ocean salt water (made from an ocean salt mix meant for salt water aquariums), not "hermit crab salt" which actually contains none of the nutrients the crab needs that are provided by ocean water.

Also, they do not prefer to drink from sponges. Give them a dish of water they can climb into (and out of) and partially or fully submerge, and you will never need to bathe them, either. They will take care of themselves.

Food for hermit crabs should NOT be commercial crab foods. It is increasingly more well known that hermit crabs can live much longer than most pet stores seem to realize, and the foods provided by pet stores and food manufacturers contain chemicals and preservatives that are harmful, slow toxins for hermit crabs. The preservative Ethoxyquin has been found to cause molting abnormalities in hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs eat a huge variety of foods, and do need an extremely varied diet containing proteins, chitin, calcium, cellulose, and zeaxanthin. They also need a seaweed source in their diet. Spirulina is an excellent, easy seaweed to supplement their diet with, just sprinkle it over their daily fresh foods.

Hermit crabs live in the Caribbean so in capivity it should be 70- 80 F

Why is my crab up side down?

where is your crab upside down and how long has he been like that? ifit has been at least 24 hrs.,it is either dead or it has molted!

How big can a hermit crab get when you have them as a pet?

Any size maybe the biggest is two hands though! ;-)

Get a bigger shell each time it molts and when it molts it is NOT dead unless it is stinky...

But if it is half way out of its shell then it is molting and leave it alone when it is because it will lead to deadly things it you dissturb... But if it is a 2 inch. then it is molting for a week or 2 maybe 3 weeks. If it is bigger then maybe a month.

Hermit crabs are easyer then Hamsters. Hope you like the advice! :-)

Why do hermit crabs kill?

Surely "Why are Hermit Crabs bugs?"

My answer to that is that the definition for "bug" is a small, creeping invertebrate. Hermit Crabs are crustaceans, with an exoskeleton (an outer shell) instead of an inner skeleton, namely without a spinal cord, therefore invertebrate. But they only "creep" when submerged in water (when the tide comes in).

Apologies for not answering your question.

(Note: another definition for "bug" is to annoy constantly, and I can't see a Hermit Crab doing that.)

What do hermit crabs do to survive?

Hermi crabs are scavengers, so they eat anything they can find, like in the wild they will eat dead fish on the shore, climb trees to eat bugs, and fruit like mangos they have fallen off of trees.

In captivity hermit crabs can eat fruits, veggies, and sea food like shrimp.

Do crabs lose their shells?

if they find another shell that they like better, they may just change right into it. I'm suggesting if you have a pet hermit crab to get around five shells for each crab try to pick around the size or maybe a little bigger for the shells. also i wouldn't buy painted shells they don't seem to like them very much. Hope that helps! :)
