What I find best with my horses when they foal is to let them have it naturally, ALWAYS have your vets number on hand in case of an emergency. If the mare does not lick right away, you should rub it down with a towel to start the circulatory and respiratory systems going. Encourage the foal to suckle from the mare, and she allows it.
If there are any other problems during delivery contact your vet immeditely because a leg or the neck could be bent causing the foal to get stuck.

When the wax falls off a mares teats will she deliver soon?
Could be. This is a sign that birth is near. But sometimes a mare will 'wax up' and the milk will start to leak out. A little is fine but if too much leaks out the mare could be loosing the "colostrum". Colostrum is the first milk that the mare produces and it contains all the immunities for the new baby to keep him healthy. If it leaks out before the foal can drink it, he won't live long. They have to have the colostrum. If you think your mare is leaking too much colostrum call your vet.
