I don't know what you mean by ugly but hybrid and electric cars are shaped much more aerodynamically (for reduced air drag and thus better fuel economy) than many other cars. I know some people don't like this shape, but more cars of all types are gradually being designed that way as improving fuel economy becomes a more significant design requirement. This is just considered more important to hybrid and electric cars, so they were designed that way first.
While it would be possible to build a hybrid car using a diesel engine instead of the gasoline engine, I do not believe any manufacturers are doing it. This may be because of problems with reliably restarting a diesel engine after stopping it that don't happen with gasoline engines, but I'm not certain.
