Regulation time for a hockey game is 60 minutes (three 20-minute periods). If the teams are tied after regulation time, overtime rules vary by league. In NHL regular season games, they play a sudden death 5-minute OT period with the teams playing 4-on-4 instead of 5-on-5 (reducing the players opens up the ice in an effort to produce a goal that will end the game). If the teams are still tied after the 5-minute OT period, the teams then move on to a three round shootout. After three rounds, the team with the most goals scored wins the game. If they are still tied after three rounds, then the shootout moves to sudden death and the teams will alternate shooters until one team scores and the other team fails to score.

In NHL Stanley Cup playoff games, there are no shootouts and all OT periods are 5-on-5, sudden death, and 20-minutes in length (a regular period). Teams continue playing until a goal is scored. The longest ever NHL game was a triple OT, 116 minute-30 second, 1-0 win by Detroit over Montreal in 1936.

As far as I know, there have only been two unassisted hat tricks in the history of the NHL...

Maurice Richard did it in March of 1948 against the Rangers in Madison Square Garden. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he actually scores four goals in that game.

Rick Nash did it in 2009, 61 years later (ironically, 61 is also Nash's number)...

I was actually at the game in which Nash scored the unassisted hat trick; it was awesome!

It remains a matter of debate but it is believed that it was invented in the mid 1850's by British soldiers staying in Nova Scotia, Canada. They used a rubber ball initially to play the first ice hockey game with some basic rules.

Eventually this same game was played with more formal rules, set by the McGill University students in Montreal, Canada in 1879. What was called the 'Ice Hockey' in mid 1850s was popularly known as 'Modern Ice Hockey' by later 18th century. These formal rules, better known as "McGill Rules", substituted the rubber ball with a puck.

Montreal saw the first national hockey organization i.e. Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in the year 1885. Later many amateur clubs and leagues were established in Canada. Ontario was the first to have a league of four teams formed in the same year.

And so on, and so on.

But until further notice from a caveman, it was the Canadians. Figures.
