How do you become a professional cricketer?

Asked by Wiki User

It depends rather how old you are but initially you should approach your nearest first class county who will advise you of where and when courses are taking place.Once registered you can umpire village cricket matches (people generally stick to their local village club and umpire home and away). To reach anything approaching county standard however takes at least 5 years of courses and monitoring. The process also involves mandatory eye tests and physical fitness tests.I reached Birmingham League standard in 1994 after 13 years of village cricket,Worcestershire League cricket and more courses than I care to recall,I did it for 7 years at that level before realising I was not getting any younger and admitting to myself that I would not be umpiring first class whatever I did. There is something of a clique surrounding first class appointments, the right school tie helps, that sort of thing. Its not as bad now as it was once but theyre very keen that you should have played to a certain standard these days.I wouldn't put you off.I hold jumpers for my local village teams 2nd XI nowadays and very much enjoy it but for it to be more than a hobby you need total dedication and if,as with most who turn to umpiring, you are simply someone who has finished playing and wishes to stay involved, the prospects of doing anything career wise are not great, particularly with 'prefered status' now given to ex-pro players.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar born 24 April 1973 is an Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and one-day international cricket. He is the only male player to score a double century in the history of ODI cricket. In 2002, just 12 years into his career, Wisden ranked him the second greatest Test batsman of all time, behind Donald Bradman, and the second greatest one-day-international (ODI) batsman of all time, behind Viv Richards. In September 2007, the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne rated Tendulkar as the greatest player he has played with or against. Tendulkar was the only player of the current generation to be included in Bradman's ElevenHe is sometimes referred to as Little Master or Master Blaster.Tendulkar is seen as an inspiration not only by cricketers but also by many other international sportspersons.
