Are tattoos trashy?

To some people they are, others not so much. It is also true that not many 'blue bloods' have body tattoos and multiple places pierced. A tattoo under any circumstances should require more thought and deliberation than they usually get before people decide to "do it". Yes, there are some (very expensive) "fixes", but realistically a tattoo has to be considered permanent. And some people put a piece of art on their body permanently that they would not want hanging on their living room wall for ten minutes. Why? And especially when it is, for all intents and purposes permanent?

Are short men just inferior of all people who are taller?

I am 6 foot 2 inches tall and I have never met a person who was inferior because of their height. There are people that may have a complex because of their size whether it is too tall or too short or too thin or too round but their size does not depict who they are as a person. Never judge a book by it's cover. Never judge a person from first glance. All men are created equal. Really. I know men who are 6 foot 6 inches and they are dumber than a brick. Size does not imply greatness. ______________ Those who worry about such things as height and general appearance do so because they've been taught to do so by others. I think the most appropriate answer to this question is to quote Eleanor Roosevelt: "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent" Those who judge people by appearance, culture and so on are deep down driven by their own feelings of inferiority. You meet them at social occasions; they're the ones who fire off a barrage of questions, all the while glancing over your shoulder in case someone more interesting or important arrives. These seekers of information need to know where you stand in their scale of superiority. They will always find something that proves to them they're better than you. This is because, deep down, they have a problem with themselves. They might convince themselves they are better than you, but inside, their inner little mongrel whines that they aren't. As if it matters. But this is how you tell the healthy minds from the small, fearful minds. They might look great and put on a good face, but they give themselves away the moment they need to know what (not who!) you are, what you earn, which suburb you live in, where your kids go to school, what kind of car you drive. Anyone who's ever walked a dog has observed this behaviour; when two dogs meet they exchange odours and body language to assess the health, temperament, and current state of mind of the newcomer. Next time the feeling of inferiority is projected at you by someone desperately seeking to be superior, feel sad for them. If they're a real bother and you can't politely escape them, think of that little mongrel inside, whining away, and remember the US First Lady who gave us some of the wisest words ever written. _________________

What percentage of Americans own stock?

Because there are many ways to "own" stock, this question can have many answers. For example, if you own a mutual fund in your company's retirement plan, you can be said to be the "owner" of the stocks that are in the mutual fund. That's in spite of the fact that you probably don't know what they are, and you have no voting control in either the stocks themselves or the mutual fund. The most commonly offered answer to this question uses this broad, and, arguably meaningless definition. The Mutual Fund Industry group - Investment Company Institute - has a lot of data on this subject. Its 2002 study, http://www.ici.org/pdf/rpt_02_equity_owners.pdf showed that 49.5% (or 52.7 million) of US Households owned equities in some way shape or form in 2002. However, only 21 million (less than 20%) owned individual stocks outside an employee sponsored plan. There is an important distinction here. When politicians talk about eliminating the capital gains tax, it is only these 21 million households who will pay lower taxes, because retirement investments are tax deferred while you hold them, and then taxed at regular income tax rates when you take the money out. I haven't found a more up to date study, but than number was actually a little bit lower than it was in 1999 (peak of the Internet boom) so I doubt it's changed much. There are also figures given for those who own equity mutual funds outside of an employee sponsored plan - 28.7 million households - as well as 35.9 million households who represent those who own either individual stocks or mutual funds or both. I'm not comfortable with either of those, as subsequent ICI studies suggest that the majority of the Mutual Fund investing households are holding their funds in IRAs or other tax deferred plans - so they, too, pay regular income tax, at the time of withdrawal, on capital gains and dividends.

What is the meaning of the concept diaspora?

The prototype for the term diaspora are the Jewish people. Nowadays the term is also used for several other transnational groups, for example oversea Chinese (huaren), armenians, kurdish people etc.

The idea behind the term is the imagination of a fictional homeland from which the people spread off in the world.

Diaspora is a constructed ethnic population category. The addition constructed is added with reference to the Afroamerican diaspora who define themselves as American descendents and African descendents. Other groups had develop similar patchwork identity.

How can an LEDC become and MEDC?

Consistent harvests (considering the fact that most LEDCs rely on the primary industry as a basis for their economy) which would require a lot of luck. Fewer floods and droughts would allow LEDCs to consistently sell their produce and in time raise their price, receive more money for their goods, and be able to start developing the raw materials they extract from the ground, and sell those for even more money. Also, this way, they wouldn't have to waste money on buying processed goods from MEDCs.

So basically, they would have to claw their way out of the primary industry which would result in much for the MEDCs. My colleague will explain what would happen to MEDCs

Is religion a unifying force in the world today?

It depends how big " in the world today" is and why; whether you are looking it from:-

- a global point of view, nationally, state, city, community, family, personally;

- a particular event or occasion;

- something that affected/ happened to/ known of by you/ friends/ ex-friends;

- culturally eg holidays

- your religion

Only you can answer those specific questions. In a general sense, religion is a unifying force providedit keeps to its boundaries/ self-imposed limits and answers people's needs, questions, and dissatisfacation. Dissatisfied people:-

- want change, or

- are not satisfied for some reason, or

- feel they are being taken for granted, or

- not being told the whole truth, or

- can't ask questions,

etc

When people who have been taught to hate others (eg because "they are not the same as us" and "we are right and everybody else is wrong" ), and then actually meet them and get to know them, then often there is an awakening or awareness which they never had before. Unless they are hard-line and dyed-in-the-wool believers, they then realize they do not have two heads, or drink babies' blood, or chop peoples' heads off, but are relatively "normal" and are not disease-ridden carriers of some fatal contagious disease, then there can be a growing understanding between them. This growing understanding does not mean abandonment of your own religion and acceptance of some-one else's: it should make you look at your own religious beliefs and may actually make your own religious beliefs and convictions even stronger.

That being said, religion can be a unifying force, but only if it "a religion" (ie recognition of there actually being spiritual beliefs) and not "the religion" (ie possibly imposed on you, with no choices). Just as tolerance of another's wrong beliefs can be taken too far and pull you down, so lack of tolerance can be taken too far and end up in hatred of the actual person (not of the impersonal beliefs and teachings of that religion). As soon as it becomes "we are right and you are wrong" and "unbelievers go to hell" (both Islam and Christianity teach this) then there will be no unification but instead war, because things are black-and-white, right-or-wrong: there is no middle ground.

There can be dialogue, but it must not be by tolerating all compromise and watering down of doctrine regardless for the sake of unity, as the 'World Council of Churches' are doing. However, when two religions are diametrically-opposed, such as Christianity and Islam, there will never be compromise on basic doctrines among strong followers of either faith, because only one is right, and it is not Islam:-

Luk 9:49-50 KJV And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. [v. 50] And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

Act 4:10-12 KJV Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. [v. 11] This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. [v. 12] Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
