What is the average IQ for a 4 year old?
---
Age is factored into IQ tests, so the average is 100 or more.
The reason for this is because IQ tests are not that new an idea and the scoring system used today is the same as was used in the past. Children are actually becoming more and more intelligent (so the human race progresses) so the average IQ in a few years might be 101-103.
That said, most people will probably get below 100 because there are some super-brains out there...
Simple answer: 100.
The triarchic theory of intelligence was formulated by Robert J. Sternberg, a prominent figure in the research of human intelligence. The theory by itself was groundbreaking in that it was among the first to go against the psychometric approach to intelligence and take a more cognitive approach.
What are good vocational goals for mental retardation?
Depending on the level of severity, a person with mental retardation can participate in society in a variety of ways. A person with mild mental retardation, may learn such vocational skills as simple assembly, stocking, cleaning, food prep, landscaping, or doing laundry. Some people with MR have splinter skills, for example, having good coordination or visual-spatial abilities which may allow for achieving higher skills such as driving. It is important to do an interest survey to focus on possible future jobs. Organizations such as WorkAbility provide matching services for adults with disabilities and good work skills with employers seeking to hire people who are differently-abled. Vocational goals also include skills for independent living such as paying bills, cooking, hygiene, shopping, cleaning, laundry, use of public transportation, and safety awareness. Social skills such as how to interview, how to make casual conversation, how to talk to a boss, and how to appropriately talk to someone of the opposite sex can also be part of a comprehensive vocational program. People who have more severe types of mental retardation can still benefit from independence training. This may include self-grooming, self-dressing, making choices about food or activities, and following routines.

Your 10 year old son has a 116 on his IQ test how can you encourage him?
Since the average person's IQ ranges from 90 - 110, your son is a bit above average intelligence. But don't push him, or make him feel self conscious or 'different'. And it is equally important to teach him that he is not 'above' or better than other children, either. But he does need to realize that he has a wonderful gift, and that he needs to use that gift to the best of his ability. Just give positive reinforcement when he does show that he is doing his best. You can do this by rewarding him with things he likes, but the best way is simple praise. Children really shouldn't be "rewarded" with gifts or money by doing what they are required to do in school, and should want to do, but an ocassional treat is fine. But I've found the best motivator is to show them how proud you are of them, but not in a way that makes them feel pressured. Just let him know you are proud of him no matter what his IQ is, and that you love him for himself. This will hopefully encourage him to do his best, but at the same time not make him feel pressured or 'different' from other children. I strongly advise teaching him good study habits, otherwise he will easily become bored in school and lose interest, and not achieve his full potential. You can read more on the "View Discussion" page.
Answer
Since your son is still very young, the IQ test may not be accurate. In any case, the best things you can do for your son are to build his character--teach him how to stick with things that he starts, so that he will have skills in dealing with frustration. Make sure he has chores and responsibilities to complete around the house. He will need to have self confidence and assurance in his own abilities. Boy Scouts is excellent for helping to develop leadership skills, so he can work with others and be kind to them. My kids started doing their own laundry and making their lunches at ten, helping with shopping and meal planning, among other things. Broaden his outlook by involving him in sports, reading and other areas besides those that come easily to him. Spend time talking about ideas; if he comes up with a good way to do something, try it out.

Is an IQ of 104 good for a twenty year old?
That is about average. However, the Intelligence Quotient is only a rough approximation of a person's overall mental abilities, and should not be thought of as a means of measuring one against others. Creativity is not directly proportional to intelligence, and the IQ does not address a person's ability to perceive their own intuition, which is a powerful tool in coping with every day life. People with high IQ's often have difficulty dealing with mundane aspects of life, and many develop some type of mental illness or disability. Being near the center of the range only means that you are less likely to find life depressing, illogical, or mystifying.
