Iver Johnson Firearms

No one can answer that without examining the gun. Armory steel would have been almost certainly intended for smokeless powder, but what has happened to the gun in the last 80-100 years could make it unsafe now. Also, depending on just how old it is, the chambers may be only 2 1/2". Have a competent gunsmith check it out.

Nitro Hunter: Trade name manufactured by Crescent Firearms, Norwich, CT, and retailed by Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville, Kentucky. "Nitro" implies that it was intended for smokeless powder. Not much collector interest in hardware store guns, but if it is checked out by a qualified gunsmith, it may be worth $200+ as a shooter.

94 years old, +/- 20. If twist steel barrels and side hammers, more likely (but not absolutely) prior to WWI. If fluid steel and a boxlock (back hammers or hammerless) ALMOST certainly after c. 1905.

It should be priceless to you as a family heirloom. Unfortunately, it is not very valuable to the rest of the world. If it has a side hammer, it makes a good mantle decoration. If it is a back-hammer boxlock, it may still be a usable firearm, but the retail value for either is about $50-$75 unless it happens to be by one of the very top-of-the-line manufacturers.

A Damascus twist steel double barrel shotgun is an antique shotgun made by layering iron and steel and welding them together. This kind of shotgun is worth approximately $3,000 depending on the condition of the weapon.

The Model 2X was made from 1932-55. In 100% condtion it is booked at $175. The Model 2XA, with Lyman No. 553 receiver sight, ivory bead, swivels and sling, books at $300 in 100% condition. Add 25% for factory checkered stock.

The Hercules shotgun was made by Iver Johnson (not Stevens, which is a totally different company) from 1918-1943, although the Hercules name was dropped in the late 30's.

I collect Iver Johnson shotguns and would be interested in this if it's for sale. It was probably manufactured around 1910. Do not fire it as the barrel is not suitable for modern day smokeless powder. Many people have fired them succesfully with modern day ammo only to have them suddenly explode and crack after repeated firings. BE CAREFUL. I have one similar in 16ga. On the other hand, you need to know exactly the model you are dealing with. For example, an Iver Johnson Skeeter 16 gauge double is on the market right now at $4,500.

Iver Johnson did produce revolvers in the 1880's with the Lion Arms trade name. For the time period, they were budget revolvers not in the same league with Smith & Wesson or Colt, but certainly serviceable. The company was called Iver Johnson's Arms and Cycle Works from 1891 to 1883. They made top break .32 S&W and .32 Specials from 1892 on. A great source of information on this firearm (and most other Iver Johnson firearms) is the book by W.E. Goforth titled, "Iver-Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Firearms 1871-1993".

Since there are no IJ collectors bidding these up unless in like-new original condition, it is worth from 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a new single shot or about $45-$60. Or even less if it is rusted or broken. But then, if you can add a few dollars worth of electrical parts to a rusty one, these are offered as floor lamps for $300 or more.

Value will depend a lot on condition, but the real definition is "a price that is acceptable to a willing buyer and seller", so unless either you or the seller was forced into the transaction, the value is what you bid. That said, I hope you didn't pay more than $35 if it is badly worn or inoperable or more than about $150 unless it is absolutely like new. If you got the original box in good condition, it is probably worth more than the gun. The first course of action to discern the value of a gun is to identify the make, model, manufacturing date, and variation. The book "Iver-Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Firearms 1871-1993" by W. Goforth will accomplish this. Then it's a simple matter of looking your gun up in one of the many firearm value books, such as the Blue Book of Gun Values, or the Standard Catalog of Firearms.

Iver Johnson started making shotguns in 1883 and didn't stop until 1987. There will be a lot of different 12 gauges in there and the value will depend on the age, model, and (most of all) condition. These were well-made and dependable guns but not the sort that collectors shell out big bucks for. Regardless of the model, unless it is like new it is unlikely to be worth more than $250. Conversely, unless it is broken or badly rusted, it should be worth at least $50.

Generally, you can't. If you can identify the model, you can determine the years in which it was manufactured, and sometimes narrow that down by variations in the model's specifications.

Its value is strictly based on the quality of the gun. The Iver Johnson name will not sell it as the original co. went out of business years ago. Recent products under its name were not original or authentic designs. Look on e-Bay for repro ads for sale under this mfgr name and these brochures will locate the year of mfg in relation to the other products. An items value is what the market will bear. Put it on gunbroker.com with a high reserve if you want to see what the public will pay. Iver Johnson marketed two different .25ACP pistols. The TP-25 was a double action modeled after the Walther - it will bring $150-$200 in excellent condition. Iver Johnson/AMAC marketed a single-action .25 auto similar to the Baby Browning that brings $100-$140 in top condition. The TP-25 was 70's-80's, the single-action was late 1980's-1993.
