Duke Ellington was born in Washington D.C in April 29,1899
The attempted fusion of the two genres initiated by jazz musicians in an attempt cash into the much larger market for rock music than for jazz, sometimes successfully achieved and more often a dismal failure. Nevertheless, a few iconic recordings came about because of it, namely Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" and some of the earlier recordings by Joe Zawinul's seminal jazz/rock band, "Weather Report". Of course, there were many more successful recordings as well as the best forgotten. Today, jazz/rock fusion is mainly an historical footnote in the history of jazz music though it still pops up its head from time to time.

Absolutely! As an African-American who lived before, after, and during the Civil Rights Movement, he experienced discrimination most everywhere he went. For example, St. Louis, MO, 1931: In St. Louis, Missouri, Duke and his band were scheduled to perform for a live radio broadcast, and needed to get to the sixteenth floor of the building to enter the studio. In order to ascend to the studio, Duke and the band needed to use the elevator, and when they tried to use the white elevator, were refused service by the operator. They were forced to use the freight elevator. (i'm writing a research paper on this stuff, so that's why it sounds kinda scholarly...) White House, President Hoover. Duke wanted to schedule a meeting with him, but was denied. "African American press accused President Hoover of being afraid to be photographed with African Americans." Hasse, p. 151
Cool and funk were the last styles of jazz to develop.
The Americans were mainly french and middle euorpean..deutch etc. They brang all their influences mainly in pitch, whislt the africans brang various rhythms and back line techniques with percussion.

Vibraphones are considerably more common, as a rhythm or solo instrument. Jazz xylophone and marimba soloists are out there, though.

Not exactly certain but some time in the 1920's. In that decade the ODJB, the popular white New Orleans band, did a tour in the U.K. As they were the first jazz band to record, it's likely that their records, that had had been released in the U.K., led to their being asked to tour. Subsequently, many jazz bands formed in the U.K. to play the "new" music.
