Ive been trying to fix the same problem for a while. As far as I can figure, It could be almost anything (not very promising is it) Try the easiest and cheapest first. Vacuum lines, fuel filter, Run the expensive gas for a fill up. (actually that ones not very inexpensive) flush your radiator, check all fluids (tranny could even cause this surging) clean throttle body, O2 censor, (If its been driven like my grandmothers car for years it might be carbon build up), Air filter, plugs and wires and when that's all done you know it might be something bigger.

it is located in the tank but you can get to it without dropping the tank. It is located top side..look for the fuel lines...and do you know how to hook up the vacuum lines on that same truck? or can you send me a picture of them?

Seized Engine?

Weak battery?

Loose or corroded battery cables?

Bad starter?

Bad starter solenoid?

Bad neutral or clutch safety switch?

The head light is a sealed unit. The outer sense is not removable.

Check instructions in the users manual.

Check the brake light switch located on the brake pedal lever. If there is power to the switch but nothing coming out replace it. Did you check the bulbs? Is there power to the rear sockets?

Engine oil?

Large port on passenger side with cap that says "ENGINE OIL".

What kind? 20W-50 weight oil.

If you don't see it (I assume you're talking about the clutch slave cylinder) it's probably got an internal slave. An internal slave cylinder is located inside the clutch housing. Servicing of this unit will require removal of the transmission. Do not forget to replace the roll pin and retainer clip (if equipped) that holds the slave cylinder/release bearing assembly in place.

On any vehicle with a hydraulic clutch, you can find the slave by following the hydraulic line from the master cylinder to it's end.

I put it in through the shift tower (with the shift lever removed.)

The tune up specs I have on my 73 cj5 for the inline six cylinder w/ one brl are idle rpm 700 Dwell 31-34 degrees Timing 3 degrees before tdc Spark plug gap .035

Most 4.0L engines with federal emissions have two oxygen sensors located on the exhaust pipe before the muffler. One sensor is mounted before the catalyst (upstream) and one is mounted after the catalyst (downstream). Most 4.0L engines with California emissions have four oxygen sensors. These are mounted in the exhaust manifold area. Two are upstream and two are downstream. There is an emissions label under the hood of the vehicle that identifies the emissions type.

yes. --ANYTHING MAN MADE CAN, AND WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. THE FACT THAT IT HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT, AND IS FAILING DOESN'T MEAN ITS DEFECTIVE, IT MEANS YOU HAVE GOTTEN 30000 MILES OUT OF IT, AND ITS TIME TO REPLACE IT.

The problem is most likely a bad Blower Motor Resistor. The High setting bypasses the resistors and connects directly to the battery. The lower speeds use the resistor to lower the voltage. Where is it?: Usually the reisitor is found behind the glove box to the left. Also the wires from the control knobs should lead to the resistor.

Check the fuse first (owners manual has a fuse box diagram) or might be on fuse box. If o/k then:

Unplug the motor and check for power(test light or multimeter) going to the motor. If you have power (key on engine off) change the motor. If no power check the resistor and then the wiring back to the switches/relays.

Look on the right side of the engine, just a little below the valve cover. About half way back, a 401 will be stamped with a raised 4 0 1, Clever, huh? You'll probably need a flashlight, may have to wipe away some grime, but that's where you look.

The oil filter is on the passenger side of the jeep on the side of the motor. The oil pan is under the jeep in fornt of the transfer case if it is four wheel drive. A fast flashing turn signal, on most any vehicle, is an indicator that a turn signal bulb is going out or has gone out on that side(i.e. front turn signal on passenger side flashing fast, check the rear turn signal bulb on passenger side.) This will cause the light on your dash board to flash fast as well. This is generaly a good time to replace all of the bulbs, turn signal, running lights, and break lights, as they are so cheap. Also check deck light or top break light if applicable for burn outs.

I had my friend telling me this for months that the only reason why my truck was so awesome was that it had a Chevy motor. they only thing Chevy was the 2.6 cylinder V6 that had less hoarse power and torque than the I4 2.5 made by AMC and then Chrysler in later years. The 2.5 L inline-4 was a shortened version of the 258 6-cylinder engine bored to 3.875 in (98.4 mm) and de-stroked to 3.1875 in (80.96 mm). The block is basically the same as the legacy 258 cu in (4.2 L) engine with a larger bore and the two center cylinders removed. The head featured a new combustion chamber and port design that was later used on the 4.0 L - the 2.5 L I-4 head was stretched by two cylinders in the center.

The four-cylinder and V6 shared the same drivetrain components, whereas stronger transmissions were needed for the new 4.0 L.

The bell housing bolt pattern for all Jeep 304/360/401 V8s and straight six 232/258/242 is the same.

The bell housing from a straight 6 (242/258) from 1983-86 will bolt to any Jeep post 63 v8.

But, the crank shaft pilot shaft holes are many diffrent sizes. So, you need to measure the pilot hole; and be prepared to be creative in finding a bearing.

NOT: You are not restricted to Jeep t-5; and can also use the othrr ford and Chevy verions; but you need to measure the pilot shaft length.

Try the T5 from the 4cyl mustang; it has the right pilot shaft length and the first gear ratio is 4:1 rather than 3:1 on a T5 for a V8.

Would wanna check your timing belt. My mother has a Jeep Wrangler and everytime she would come to a stop sign, or light where she had to let of the gas, the jeep would die. A friend looked at it and realized that the timing belt had a bunch of chuncks missing from it. Once it was replaced she hasn't had a problem since.
