Kayaking

One common method of representing scale on a map is a ratio such as 1:24,000 (the current scale for the USGS 7.5 min. topographic series) which indicates that one unit if length (mm, cm, inch, etc...) on the map is equal to 24,000 of the same unit of length (mm, cm, inch, etc...) in real life. For example, 1 inch on a map with a scale of 1:24,000 is equal to 24,000 inches of horizontal distance on the ground in real life.

The second common method of representing scale on a map is using a scale bar which is a graphical representation of some set of distances. The distances in a scale bar are generally real life distances as you would experience them if you were walking a straight line between two points (i.e. they are usually in units of feet, meters, kilometers, miles, etc...). A scale bar can be used to measure a distance on the map in terms of how far it is in real life, the format is similar to a ruler.

A Sea kayak differs from a lake or river kayak in that it is longer, therefore faster. Also the hull width is generally narrower than a lake kayak, making them less stable but in turn faster.

Sea Kayaks are designed for longer distance travel on the ocean or lakes. The longer the kayak the faster the boat. Sea Kayaks generally range in length from 14-18 feet in length.

Lake kayaks are designed for shorter trips, generally they are wider - this causes them to be more stable. They range in length from 9-14 feet.

River Kayaks are shorter, this causes them to be slower but more maneuverable so that they can avoid rocks and holes. There are two main types of river kayaks, playboats and creek boats. Playboats used on rivers and are the preferred boat to do tricks in. They are shorter than creek boats and have a flat bottom. Creek boats are best in narrow creeks with a lot of rocks. They have round bottoms in order to slide off the rocks.

You do not choose an inflatable for popularity, you choose it for utility. Consider what it will be used for before picking a colour or make.

Kayaks are remolded by taking tiny plastic beads and putting them into a big kayak mold. The mold is then heated up and rotated around until the plastic beads conform to the kayak mold. The mold is then cooled, and the kayak is removed, cleaned up, then the seat, hatches, and deck rigging are installed.

Slalom is a discipline in alpine ski racing, a sport in which the racers go through a timed course to see who's the fastest.

Kayaks come in many colors and to a large extent the color you will choose will be dependant on your usage. For example if you are hunting or fishing on your kayak then yo may want to go for a subtle color that will offer you a degree of camoflague. If you are in the ocean or a large lake or you have a child kayaking then a bright color is ideal. The reason for this is that the kayak can easily be spotted by other boat users or from the shore.

Kayaks are hydrodynamic not aerodynamic. Aerodynamic means 'of the air'. People don't fly on kayaks.

The Loon series has mostly been replaced by the Camden, Dirigo, Vapor and Heron lines, so the 138 is no longer made. However, the Loon 111 is still being produced.

I did it about 3 years ago. It took about 8 hours from one end to the other in pretty bad conditions, but we were all fit and capable kayakers

A Kayaking helmut provides lightweight protection for your head. They are usually constructed from some kind of plastic and will have foam padding built in. They are essential if you are trying any kind of whitewater or extreme kayaking, but less so if you are gently paddling around a local lake.

Kayaks are used for many different things. They can be used as transportation, bird watching, photography, fishing, camping, river running, sun tanning, as well as many other fun activities.

Trouble with aluminum is that it will oxidize quickly in normal atmosphere, so it won't really stay oxide free very long. But as far as removing the oxide there are several options:

- fine sand-paper

- stainless steel wire brush.

- Brillo pads

- Media(sand) blastin

Ther might be some etching solution that's powerful enough, but I've never tried that.
