Why keyboard letters are randomnly placed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The QWERTY keyboard is not random. It was designed by Christopher Sholes in in the early 1870's. He was trying to design a type writer that didn't jam up with rapid succession of the type bars moving (a fast typist). After trial and error for several years, Sholes eventually developed the QWERTY keyboard that had the lowest rate of jamming of all designs he tried. For more information, search Wikipedia for QWERTY. Thank you.

How do you make a degree symbol?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The simplest way is to type a small letter 'o', then to format the letter to 'superscript'.

This is done by 'blocking' the letter with the cursor, and using the menu tools to format.
In a word processing program such as 'Word' the procedure would be

  • type an 'o'
  • 'block' it
  • click on Format
  • click on Font
  • tick the 'superscript' box

Here is an example, showing before and after: 100 oC, 100 oC

It can also be done using a zero, but a small 'o' gives a smaller degrees sign.
It can also be done by using 'Insert/symbol', but that can take just a little longer.

Or

Use the keyboard and type either of the following sequences:

  • ALT 248
  • ALT 0176

Both will achieve the degree symbol °

Tip: Hold the ALT key down while typing the code numbers. Then, when you release the ALT key, the º will appear.

For more ALT key codes, see 'Related links' below.

What is inactive cell in excel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

At any one time you can only be working on one cell in Excel, like when you are typing data. Even if you have many cells selected, only one can actually be used. That cell is the active cell. All other cells are inactive. So an inactive cell is any cell that is not the active cell.

What is typing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some typing skills are sitting straight-backed, feet on the floor. Try not to look at your hands and move your fingers as fast as you can. Most of all, go back and check if any of your words are mispelled.

Good posture is very important to help you improve your typing skill, but the skill is usually measured in the number of words you are able to type per minute. Someone who types 70 wpm would be said to have 'greater typing skill' than someone who types only 55 wpm. There are 'tests' you can take that will help you to determine what your current skill is. The number of errors, or mistakes, also count toward the final score.

To improve typing skills, practice is key. The best way to do this is to spend a little time each day typing something. Before long, your fingers will know what to do without you having to tell them, and you will become faster as time goes on.

Is the average secretary's left hand do only 23 percent of the typing on the keyboard?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. The most common letters of the alphabet are on the lefthand side of the keyboard. They are e, r, s, t, followed by a. On the righthand side of the keyboard, only n and l are common letters. The spacebar can be used by either hand and is a personal comfort choice, as is the caps function.

This answer is specific to typing and not other types of computer keyboard functions such as keyboard shortcuts and maneuvering through documents with hot keys, with hands or one.

If the keyboardist uses lots of numbers, much can depend on whether or not they use the number keys across the top of the keyboard. Again, that's split equally between the hands. But, if they use the number pad for numbers, then it's purely a righthanded thing.

Similarly, if the keyboardist likes to use keyboard shortcuts, use of both hands is equal. But, if the keyboardist likes to use their mouse, then the righthand dominates that function.

It all really depends on the keyboardists and their use preferences.

Why are there different kinds of keyboards?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

there are different kinds of keyboards because people don't think alike. in other words, some people prefer their keyboards looking that way instead of this. Or, simply because of their functions. it depends on the user. for instance, if you're at home; you don't need a wireless keyboard right. but if you're in a lab, it would be very convenient to use one cause you don't want to have wires everywhere do you.

What do you do if a key sticks on your keyboard?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The keys on your keyboard can be pulled up and carefully cleaned. You also clean the surface the keys are attached to, avoiding any electronic components visible. You must be careful when removing the keys, you could damage the locking mechanism. I would suggest a forum for your exact model of computer. That will let you know how your keys connect and the best way to remove them. You could also attempt to blow out the keyboard with air, cleaning out dust and dislodging any tiny object that may have gotten stuck under a key. They sell the air in most stores.

How do you clean your keyboard?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Turn off your computer (so you won't hurt anything). Then, run your rag over keyboard. Use rag to get in between cracks. You can also use Clorox bleach clothes to keep your keys and mouse clean and disinfected.

Turn the Keyboard over and support it at an angle and pond on the back side. You will be amazed at what comes out.

Department stores such as Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and K-Mart, sell air cans. They have a thin straw that you can attach to the nozzle to get out any dust that you may have in your keyboard. The can looks like an aerosol can.

Where does the name 'QWERTY keyboard' come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer
Before the answer, here is something you can try at home. Type 'QWERTY.' Notice the placement of those letters on your keyboard?

Most likely, it came from the top six keys, starting with leftmost: they read exactly 'q', 'w', 'e', 'r', 't', 'y'. It is used to identify the "standard", canonical layout (as opposed to Dvorak keyboards).

How this layout was designed is a historical matter.

Back when people used typewriters, the keys were grouped alphabetically. This caused problems, however, because this meant that the most common letters were groped together. Back in those days, the typewriters were mechanical, and the hammers that printed the letters constantly became jammed. Thus the 'qwerty' keyboard was invented to space the most common letters away from each other. When word processing became electronic, the keyboard layout was so widespread that it would have been inefficient for people to learn how to type again.

How do you type a schwa on a us keyboard using the windows OS?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To type ə, hold down the Alt key and type 0601 on the number pad.

Ensure that numlock is on. You must use the number pad and not the numbers across the top of the keyboard.

This is a unicode character and will not display properly in all contexts. For example, it works in Wordpad, but not in Notepad.

If you are having trouble getting this to work, you can launch the Windows "Character Map". On my system it is located at "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools" (this may vary with different versions of Windows).

In the Character Map, locate the Schwa symbol, you may then select it, and copy it for pasting someplace else.

Also you notice, when the Schwa is selected in the Character Map, the status bar reads U+0259. 259 is the Unicode number for this symbol in hexadecimal. 0x259 converted into decimal is 601, which is the code typed on the number pad. This can be used to type any Unicode character, if you are using an application that supports Unicode.

What is net typing speed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Gross speed is raw speed. It is a calculation of exactly how fast you type with no error penalties.

Net speed takes accuracy into account. To calculate Net WPM, take your gross WPM result and subtract the amount of errors you left in per minute, also known as the error rate.

What does the Function F7 Key do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It does nothing if you aren't using it for any programs. But if you have a program open like Microsoft word the F7 key opens up spellcheak. You see the F- keys do different things in different programs.

UNLESS you are holding the FN key in the bottom left hand corner, if you hold that then it will do what the picture in blue shows on the F7 key.

What is the keystroke to get windows to boot from the CD?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You have to get to the BIOS to do that. Here is how to get to the BIOS and get your Computer to boot into the CD:

To enter the BIOS is very simple. As soon as you boot up your system rapidly hit the Del or Delete button on your keyboard, and if that doesn't work reboot your computer and this time hit rapidly the F2 Key (At the top) and if that doesn't work reboot again and rapidly hit the F10 Key.

After you get to the BIOS go to "BOOT" and make sure that the CD Drive is at the top, and to do that go down to the top option then hit enter then select the CD Drive.

Also make sure the boot order is like this:

1.CD Drive2.Floppy Drive3.Hard Disk Drive

Then go to the top and go to the right until you get to "EXIT" then go down until you get to Exit (Save Changes) or Save Changes and Exit.Reboot with the CD in the Drive and it should automaticly boot to the CD.

I hope this helped,PSPSlimBoy ☺ :)

Working principle of keyboard?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

the keboard work as:

Inside the keyboard, there are metallic plate, circuit board (key matrix) and processor, which are responsible for transferring information from the keyboard to the computer. Depending upon the working principle, there are two main types of keys, namely, capacitive and hard-contact. Let's discuss in brief about the functioning of capacitive and hard contact key.

Capacitive Key

On the underside of a capacitive key, a metal plunger is fixed, which helps in activating the circuit flow. When a capacitive key is pressed, the metal plunger applies a gentle pressure to the circuit board. The pressure is identified by the computer and the circuit flow is initiated, resulting in the transfer of information from the circuit to the currently installed software.

Hard Contact Key

A hard contact key is attached with a metallic plate that helps in connecting the circuit board. When the hard contact key is pressed, it pushes a metallic plate, which in turn touches the metallic portion of the circuit plate. This overall process of completing a circuit results in a circuit flow, allowing the transfer of the message to the central processing unit (CPU), which is further transmitted to the software.

In both the key types, the circuit signals the processor to read and/or identify the character that has been pressed. For example, in a hard contact key, the processor reads that pressing 'shift' and 'a' keys at the same time corresponds to 'A'. Hence accordingly, the letter, sign or symbol is displayed on the screen. Releasing the pressed key breaks the circuit flow, after which the key retains its original position. The communication between a computer keyboard and main computer is bi-directional, meaning that message or information can be sent within each other.

Why is it important to use good technique while keyboarding?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Posture: You should be sitting upright with your feet on the floor. Your wrists should float an inch or two above the desk/keyboard (NOT resting on them) And the keyboard should be at a level so that your elbows bend approx 90 degrees. Wrists should be straight.

Fingertips should rest on the "home row" keys... asdf for the left hand and jkl; for the right with thumbs over the space bar. Assuming a standard QWERTY layout of course.

The keyboard should lie flat on the desk, not slanted upward, do not use the retractable legs on the back of the keyboard to tilt it.

Consider a split or "wave" ergonomic keyboard. Once you get used to it, you may find it much more comfortable. In all respects a good quality keyboard can mean the difference between severe pain or years of uneventful typing.
