Its hard to answer a question like that without first knowing the structure of the overall network. However usually its as straight forward as plugging the printer into the back of a router. Then from there you go round all the clients and search do a search for a network printer. Input the IP address of the printer and that should do it. So long as you are sure both networks can see each other then there really shouldn't be much problem. Usually the hardest part is trying to figure out a strategic place to put the printer.

Personally I like having 2 or 3 smaller switches. A few years back I had 26 machines on one 32 port switch. It was during a holiday period, and the switch just stopped working. With no shops open and no deliveries, the network was down for 2 days before I was able to get a new switch.

Though some people will argue that having a few smaller switches is more hassle then its worth. But since it gives you that added bit of fault tolerance I think its a small price to pay.

Unfortunately not. RJ45 Straight cables, are for use with hubs / switches and routers.

If you want to network 2 pc's together without a hub, you need a cross over RJ45 cable.

If they both have wireless (Airport) cards, just set up one to accept wireless connections in the network and sharing control panels. do this by: 1. with one of the macs, create a network. 2. with the other, search for wireless networks and find the one that was created. 3. chose that network to connect the two macs

Go to the laptops "Control Panel" and open the "system" icon ... it should list the equipment present on your machine.
