Why is the shark not a mammal?
Alright, so because a Shark is an animal it's Kingdom- Anamalia. Because it has a basic skeletal structure (Cartalidge, not bone) it goes into phylum chordata. Although, instead of being placed into the class mammalia like an elephant would, it is placed into the class chondricthyes, which is one of three classes of fish (The other two being Ostychthyes [Bony Fish] and Agnatha [Jawless fish]) that contains sharks and rays. It belongs here instead of mammalia because it's a fish, it lays eggs, has no fur, does not produce milk, etc. Look up what makes a mammal and you can compare them.
Can manatees hold their breath underwater?
The act of swimming would require an organism to be in a liquid. Generally Manatees live in a liquid called water. Though there are many other liquids out there, I don't think manatees swim out of water.

What is being done to preserve manatees?
Manatees as you might know are on the endangered list meaning they are less populated and are being killed or dying off fast because of water polution. But there is a hope for the manatees because of the "Save The Manatee Club" (look it up) I am an active member of this foundation. Let me explain... in this well structured foundation manatees who may have been hurt by boat propellers or crab nets are diagnosed and healed and if they are still in condition the are put in captivity until they heal.

Some are like the breathing....They breath just like us except they come up for air and breathe in ninety percent of what they need to breathe while we only breathe in ten percent..They also use there front flippers to swim because if they couldn't use them to swim then they couldn't swim at all...Anything else just ask i hope it helps!!
Absolutely! I highly recommend a Manatee, especially if you live in an apartment, they are perfect because they don't need a lot of room or exercise. Just a large tank and about 3 tonnes of turtle grass to keep them fed. Manatees don't like to be alone at night so make sure you put the tank in your room so they don't feel lonely. Manatees are very social so keep them connected to your social circle by keeping their Facebook and Twitter feeds updated daily.
I hope you enjoy your Manatee! : )
Is it harmful to give manatees fresh water?
It is neither physiologically harmful nor a good idea. Manatees get all their physiological requirements from the food that they eat. Occasionally they will migrate to fresh water sources to supplement this requirement. They can be attracted to artificial fresh water sources as well, such as water control structures. The problem with offering fresh water to manatees is that it creates the same potential problem as the "don't feed the bears" situation. It alters their natural behavior, conditions them to interact with humans and/or boats and boat facilities, which potentially increases dangers to them. While difficult to enforce, providing food and/or water to manatees (an endangered species) is also technically illegal.
How do manatees get oxygen and water?
Welll.........They live in the water and if they want oxygen the go out of the water! ITS SO MAGICAL!!!!!!!
Manatees are mammals, yes. They are warm blooded and, also breath air with lungs that, on average, are two thirds the length of their body. Also, they have hair, as most other mammals. Even though they may appear to be related to dolphins, or maybe whales, they are more closely related to the elephant. Lastly they give birth, and suckle their calves, as other mammals do, only they do all this under water. For more details see sites listed below.
Could the west Indian manatee be considered a keystone species?

What are predators of manatees?
Manatees do not generally have a exact predeator. Mankind can be considered as one,but are usually not. Some say that manatees have bad relation with Crocodiles and Alligators, but this is not assured.
They get killed for their flesh for oil lamps.
Manatees also get killed by the carelessness of humans speeding on their motor boats and accidentally hitting the manatees! Also, there is a disease called the Red Disease and that kills many manatees also!
How do manatees adapt to survive in the water?
Some manatees like to use their flippers to crawl on the sea floor
Some manatees use their flippers to move/crawl around on the sea floor, others slowly glide at the surface using their tail as a motor.
There are 4 species within the Family of Sirenia throughout the world:
-West Indian Manatee: Which populates the Carribbean coastlines, and Florida, but can migrate great distances with warm water during the summer months (from Florida to Texas and up the Eastern Seaboard).
-West African Manatee: Found on the western coast of the continent of Africa.
-Amazonian Manatee: A strictly river-going species native to the Amazon River Basin.
-Dugong: Found in the Indo-Pacific region. There was formerly a species called the Stellar's Sea Cow which was the only cold-water species found in the Bearing Sea, and the coast of Alaska. It was hunted to extinction within 30 years of its discovery.
Do manatees have bellybuttons?
Yes. Because whales give birth to their young just like humans do, their young require an umbilical cord in order to eat while in the womb.
since they're mammals, yes. But I've never seen one so I don't know what they look like.
Answer I do think that whales have belly buttons but I do want to know why the scientist don't say so.
What is special about a manatee?
Manatees are extremely curious and gentle. They will approach people in the water to check them out, and come close enough to allow you to touch them. That is why laws against interaction have been put into place in many states. Due to their gentle and trusting nature, some people take advantage and harm them. It also puts them at greater risk of accidental injuries.
