Marching Bands

Royal Corsaires Marching Display Band was created in 1996.

When a band performs in a parade they are marching in a block formation consisting of ranks (rows) and files (columns). It is the duty of each member to stay within their rank and file so that the lines are maintained.

After World War I there was a surplus of instruments from the bands that played during the war. The common uniform for marchers consists of a hat, plume, uniform jacket and pants, dinkles or drillmasters (shoes) gloves, gauntlets, and sometimes music and a lyre, although many bands memorize their music.. Tech-wise, if you have soloists or electronic instruments you will need speakers and mics.

Depending on the state, or individual competition, AA, AAA, and other various classes are determined by the size of either the school of the marching band, or the size of the band itself. Usually, AA denotes a smaller size school or band than AAA.

To get a marching band cape, you have to be a marching band drum major. A drum major is like the captain of the band and to signify so, they wear capes with their uniforms. I'm not sure where you could buy one if that's what you're looking for.

There is a few ways this happens. Lower instruments (i.e. tubas, bass clarinets, euphoniums) sound travels slower than say a flute, trumpet, or clarinet, therefore if lower instruments don't neccessarily play ahead of the tempo (not rushing but keeping tempo rather than following it) will sound behind but the closer you are to the band the more together it will sound. The football field might have affect too depending where are you sitting. if there is steep bleachers and there very tall, you are supposed to aim towards the pressbox so sound will hit the pressbox and have to travel to you below it. If the bleachers are laid back and kind of tall it will hit almost at the same time. If your sitting by the field it will sound a little more together if the lower instruments are keeping tempo.

I can't speak for all bands, but in the marching band that I was in, we were graded for daily attendance of practices and for shows/parades.

there isnt a technical name for them. its usually either a pit member a color gaurd member, a cheerleader, or a pomline member.

Most bands don't like when your hair touches your collar - its not uniform. So go with a high, tight, bun, like a dancer bun. If your band is a bit more casual, maybe a ponytail. I don't think any band would approve of long, down, hair, though.

You probably can, but you should first try to see if your school has an online calendar with a list of rehearsals. If it says there is a closed rehearsal, you will not be able to watch. If it is still unclear, then either ask a member of the marching band or the director of your school's marching band program.

It will be hard but it can be done. If you are a dancer you cant tho. But to play an instruments its fine. All it is is playing and marching. Nothing else. Im in marching band and have asthma. By the way just playing and marching is harder than it sounds, it is also more than nothing else. You have to think about where you are going and at what speed when. If you are not doing a wind instrument its a little easier because you dont use breath to play. It can be done

If you learned music theory, including reading and sight reading sheet music, as opposed to playing improv with no reading skills, the fortunate thing is that you are ready to play any band instrument you like, and the theory is not going to be an obstacle. It depends really on your interest. I knew piano when I started high school and I took up the trombone. It was great fun, and it was easy since I already knew how to read. You will find it easy to pick up any instrument you want.
