Why is Abraham Lincoln on Mount Rushmore?
The four Presidents depicted on Mount Rushmore were chosen by the head sculptor for the monument, Gutzon Borglum, for their key roles in the development of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln was chosen because he held the nation together during its greatest trial, the Civil War. Lincoln believed his most sacred duty was the preservation of the union. It was his firm conviction that slavery must be abolished.
The faces can be viewed from outside the visitors area during all daylight hours, and while they are illuminated. The parking area opens at about 8am till about an hour after the lighting ceremony. In the summer, this would mean closure at about 11 pm.
