moustaches are awesome because they are silly and people already drew moustaches on peoples faces and then to think if they are popular then people won't get into fights cuz they have a moustache one their face :). No, it's your preference to do so. The Prophet(peace be upon him) had a beard, and he encouraged the followers to try to be and act like him.

So that is why so many muslims have bread even though they are not doing the 1000 other things which he used to do which are actually more important that growing a beard like praying 5 times a day, treating and helping others with kindness especially those who are poorer than you, being honest and not lying or backbiting, staying away from interest, along with not eating and drinking foods and drinks that have been made forbidden by God. Above all, tolerating others no matter how annoying their actions are to you and bringing equality into the society by sharing and giving to those who are in need and other simple and easy things which quite a lot of muslims don't do.

So to sum it up, you can grow a bread and be the worst example of a muslim trying to justify your sins by constantly blabbing on about how you have a beard just like the Prophet(peace be upon him) or you can be clean shaved and be the perfect example of a muslim ignoring people who go on about growing beards is so rewarding.

In the case you are interested, beards were encouraged by the Prophet(peace be upon him) because quite a lot of men look a bit feminine without facial hair, so to discourage men from looking like the opposite sex growing facial hair was encouraged. That is the same reason why wearing feminine clothes and adapting their styles and habits is extremely discouraged in Islam, as men are born to be men while women are born to be women(No way related to Homosexuality, which itself is another topic in Islam).

So in the light of the previous paragraph, you can see that it isn't that important about the length of the beard but just the sheer presence of it. You can go full gandalf and it will be okay, or you can just maintain it at about an inch or two length and it will still be okay.

Also, it is emphasised that you should trim the mustache shorter than the beard, so again its your choice to go for full clean shaved mustache with gandalf beard or just keeping it shorter than your already short beard.

Personally, i am going for an Ezequiel Lavezzi type of beard which looks good and brings you some swagger to go on with pretty much anything you wear provided that you aren't overweight and have an actual sense in the modern fashion trends. Goodluck.

Hipsters think that mustaches are "ironic", which means that they think when they grow mustaches and look like jerks, they make a commentary against older men who wont cut their mustaches since they really think they look good. Instead the older men ignore the hipsters, since they don't understand their supposed ironic "agenda", older men keep wearing their mustaches, as well as hipsters keep wearing them "ironically". But you never really wear anything ironicallly, would you voluntarily put something on you, which you really don't like? In reality hipsters wear mustaches because they follow other hipsters (unless they wouldn't be hipsters) and after someone first wanted to grow a mustache, he made up an excuse (ironic mustaches) and then everyone followed him.

This kind of quirks of fashion will come and go. They can disappear as fast as they first appeared.
