In the twelve bar blues why does playing a flat 3rd work when the I chord has a major 3rd?

because you can play 12 bar blues as if each chord refers to the relative blues scale, for example, blues in C, you can play the C Blues scale during the C chord, and an F blues scale during the F chord and so on.

it sounds minor and ultimately makes it sound more bluesy, so to speak

What does principles of theory of music mean?

Principles of music theory usually refer to the theory of harmony. That in an of itself is a broad term for defining the entire music realm. The book by Arnold Schoenberg has been considered the authority on music, however, it is a dense and difficult book to digest.

Most beginning students really need to learn the rules and so called principles of basic music in order to play.

These rules involve the understanding of the music language notation with the use of the staff and notes and the counter part of rests.

The six essential basic principles are the framework of notes, rhythm, key signatures, scales, chords and harmonic understanding. Each of these has their own principles and mathematical structure. You will need to study each and it can take 1 to 5 years to cover them sufficient detail to be proficient.

Is alto higher than bass and treble?

When you are speaking of singing voices, the usual four are (from high to low) soprano, alto, tenor and bass. So alto does sing higher than bass. When you are speaking of written staffs, the two staffs are treble (higher) and bass (lower). An alto singing part is typically written on the treble staff; but the alto range extends down (using ledger lines below the staff) into notes that can also be written on the bass staff.

What are the values of augmented fourth and diminished fifth in music?

Those are both names for the same interval, where the top note is 6 half-steps (semi-tones) away from the bottom. It is also known as a tritone, and is halfway between an octave.

If you start on C, the augmented fourth above is F-sharp, and the diminished fifth is G-flat. They sound the same (they are enharmonic).

In music, contour is the direction and shape that the notes move in. This is a very difficult concept to explain in words.
