Here is a picture of the 2010 Armada -the tail lights are the same since 2004 (at least it looks that way) - see "Related Links" section of this answer.

Open the rear door. Remove the top and bottom 10mm bolts with a ratchet. You do not need to remove the middle screw. The other side of the lamp assembly is secured with plastic pins. Just pull and turn the light assembly and it will come off. The plastic pins are sturdy and should not break (though it sounds like they will).

Then turn the light bulb assembly counter clockwise until the grooves are free then slide the lamp out. Pull the light bulb out and slide the new bulb in (think its 3817 - Autozone will find it for you). Push and twist the lamp clockwise to lock it back into place.

Push the plastic pins back into the holes first, then the bolt side. Screw the bolts back in and there you have it.

The hinge on these doors tends to rust -- it's a pin inside rolled sheet metal, so capillary action pulls the water in and rusts the pin. The it breaks. If you've caught it in time, flow some penetrating oil into the hinge and wiggle the door back and forth till it's free. I use some motorcycle chain oil in the hinge once a year before snow season to keep the salt water out. What I found was that the interior lever is, in fact, retracting the pin in the fuel door compartment just fine, but the mechanism that creates the spring action to open the door when the pin is retracted is gone. I believe this action is created by a protrusion on a plastic clip on the hinge side of the door that breaks off over time. This protrusion is designed to push against a rubber pad when closed, creating enough spring action to "fling" the door open when the lever is pulled and the pin retracts. Batteries for late model Passats run in the $60's. A mechanic would do the job in about fifteen minutes but would probably charge about 30, which means (at most dealer shop rates) the change could cost you more than a hundred bucks. Having said that, replacing it yourself is easy enough, as long as you're willing to handle a wrench and some cursing. For late model Vee-Dubs, you'll likely need the four-digit radio code which came with your original paperwork in order to get the car restarted after a battery change -- this is an antitheft measure, but it's easy enough to deal with.

3/26/05 - current ranges are from 30$ (at wal-mart) and up to 150$ for an optima spiral cell battery (comments about this brand, anyone?). prices will vary some based on make/model of car. a general thought is to replace the battery if there are problems after 4 yrs. some like the AC Delco brand make carry up to a 7 yr warranty. I've used these in the past and love them, although they are hard to find (K-Mart, Exhaust Pro, etc). Most other brands are all made in Mexico and probably by the same company, but just re-branded.

7-3-09 - If you are talking about a Mercedes, there batteries run about $155 bucks for the original battery, and its a really good idea to install one of the Mercedes batteries if you have a Mercedes. There batteries last up to about 8 - 9 years!!! There is no other battery out there that will last that long! Great investment

If you have a manual transmission, you're in good shape. If it's an automatic, you might want to use a dolly to lift the front wheels. They are renable from and u-haul, or try loking in the trading times.

Pour? The only time I've seen gas pour into a air filter is in a boat. The fuel pump in a boat unlike a car has a line running back to the air filter so that if the pump goes bad you dont fill the bottom of the boat with gas. If this is in a vehical you may have a timing condition. Try and locate the source is there a line coming into the air filter near where you see the gas? Trace the line.
