Nose Jobs

Like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. To minimize the risks, make sure you discuss and understand each step of the procedure and address any concerns with your plastic surgeon before you go under the knife. Developing a good relationship with your surgeon before the procedure will make you more comfortable with the procedure and more confident in your plastic surgeon�s abilities.

Some of the risks or complications for nose jobs include:

• Burst blood vessels that appear as tiny marks or spots.

• Scarring if your surgeon used an open surgical technique is used. An open nose job is when the plastic surgeon makes inscions around the outside of the nose. A closed technique is when the incisions are made on the inside of the nose. During your consultation, ask your surgeon about which technique he prefers and/or the reasons and benefits for using it on you.

• Temporary loss of smell.

• Swelling and bruising around the nose.

• A whistling sound in your nose when you breathe in and out. Caused by scar tissue.

• Depression -- related to disappointment in the procedure or having a hard time getting used to a new look.

• Reactions to the anesthesia, such as hypoxia and cardiovascular complications. Certain herbal supplements and medications should not be taken before or while under anesthesia: St John�s Wort, Echinacea, or Melatonin, anti-depressants and MAO inhibitors. Be sure to disclose all medications, including herbal supplements, to your plastic surgeon to avoid any reactions to the anesthesia.

Remember, it can take up to a year for your nose to heal from a nose job. While you should point out any concerns you have with the procedure, your surgeon should be able to predict how your nose will appear after the swelling and bruising disappears. But, even the best plastic surgeon can�t always perform the perfect nose, so additional surgeries may be necessary.

• The nose is a complicated organ made from many parts including cartilage, bone, soft tissue and more. People have wanted to change the size of their nose for centuries and for many different reasons (at one time it was even thought that the size of your nose determined your virility or intelligence). The first nose surgery was performed as early as 500 B.C where flaps of skin from the forehead were used to help those who had their nose forcibly removed as a punishment for a crime. You can disguise a large nose with makeup, and you can choose nose surgery, known as Rhinoplasty, to alter the shape of your nose, but you cannot make your nose permanently smaller on your own. In this wikiHow we will examine a controversial method some people claim will alter the shape of your nose by manipulating cartilage, similar to what doctors do when they give you a nose job. Be aware that this technique is possibly dangerous if done too often and cannot permanently alter the size of your nose, only temporarily, at best. Like surgery it can also have serious side effects if done incorrectly.

1. Understand cartilage:
   • Cartilage is malleable connective tissue that protects bones from rubbing together too much.
   • Cartilage is also used by the body to shape and support other structures, including the nose.
   • Over a lifespan cartilage can be replaced by bone in certain areas, including the nose.
   • Cartilage can be manipulated because it is made principally of water, about 70% of cartilage is water.
   • Cartilage can be redistributed with movement, but cannot be made smaller with pressure.
   • Other components of cartilage include collagen, proteoglycans, and chondrocytes, proteins and cells that help support and build the cartilage.
2. Understand that to make your nose temporarily smaller using this method you are doing home surgery by manipulating the cartilage in your nose.
3. Wash or moisten your nose area. This isn't compulsory, but it's a little easier to do this on smooth skin.
4. Hold the top of your nose with your thumb and index finger.
5. Slowly bring your fingers to the sides of your nose. Don't press or pull because this might make the nose bloat up a little bigger and can damage the cartilage.
6. Do this for two to three minutes, starting at the top of your nose each time.
7. Repeat about 50 times a day or even more.
8. The results may be visible in 2-3 months time.
9. As soon as you stop, and if you have not permanently disfigured your nose, your nose will return to its normal shape.

• Don't pick your nose. Compulsive nose picking, known as rhinotillexomania, can increase the size of your nose and introduce infections or more serious problems.
• Before you try this technique you should be ready to continue doing this exercise every single day for the rest of your life. Your nose goes back to its original shape if you don't do this regularly.
• Even while you're doing this, don't stress yourself! You look great just the way you are. Just because you don't look like Catherine Zeta Jones doesn't make you ugly. We're all beautiful in our own way!

Warnings

• Messing with your nose can have serious side effects including infections, difficulty breathing and even (iatrogenic) deformities.
• The younger you are the softer and more malleable your cartilage is, however it also makes you vulnerable to deformity or other side effects.
• An urban myth says that placing a clothspin on a baby's nose will make it smaller by altering the shape of the cartilage. Again, this is more likely to physically (suffocation) or psychologically damage your baby than change their nose.
• Remember, your nose is probably a whole lot smaller than it looks to you.
• Don't press on the nose when doing this because it makes the whole exercise useless.
• Never do this if you have a good singing voice. It will change your beautiful singing voice to a flat nasal voice by changing your nasal cavity.
• Also - You might move the bridge bone down too far and this will lead to breathing problems

One who has received rhinoplasty (nose surgery) heals by following the Surgeons orders, which are:

1. Leave the cotton and antibiotic pack in the nostrils until told otherwise. This will help the nose heal from the surgery.
2. A small stint will be placed on the nose and should remain for 1 week. Upon the week's end, visit the Surgeon and they will clean and dress the nose.
3. Cold compresses and Aspirin are recommended to assist in healing.
4. One can return to their normal activities in two weeks, but there will be swelling for up to 6 weeks.
5. Naturally, do not do excessively rough activities that could injure the face while the nose job is healing and setting in place. Caution should be placed one healed to maintain the integrity of the look of the rhinoplasty.

Sorry, there is nothing else, but either make-up to give the illusion of shortening the nose, making it look narrow or smaller or surgery. Plastic surgery for the nose isn't all that bad now and can be done as out-patient surgery. You will have a couple of black eyes and swelling for approx. 10 days or two weeks, but the fact you look better in your own eyes will make all the world of difference. My Goddaughter (now 25) had a big bump in her nose and she had nose surgery and she said it was the best thing she ever did. It changed her whole personality and she feels better about herself. Usually I'm not big on silly plastic surgery, but I do understand if someone has a lump in the bridge of their nose, flattened nose, too wide of a nose why they would want this surgically corrected.

While nose jobs are performed on people of all ages, most plastic surgeons do not perform nose jobs before the age of 16 for girls and 18 for boys. Plastic surgeons usually wait for facial growth to be complete before performing a nose job on a teenager.

Why would a teenage want or need a nose job? Self-image and appearance are very important to teenagers. Images in magazines and on television have increased the pressure for teens to look like Hollywood actors and actresses. Most plastic surgeons agree that teenagers should wait to get plastic surgery, unless they had cosmetic trauma to the nose (which impacts the proportion of the nose to the rest of the face) or the function is impaired. Even still, parents should talk to their teen about their concerns and try to address their real issues, such as fitting-in and looking good compared to their peers, before they consider a nose job. If a nose job is necessary, make sure you have researched the benefits and risks with a plastic surgeon. Also consider using a surgeon that works with children frequently and relates well to your child. Consult your family doctor for a referral.

Additional things to consider:

* Is the problem cosmetic or functional? A cosmetic issue may be eliminated after some additional growing. A functional issue, like a deviated septum, may require the procedure. Discuss your options with your surgeon.

• Is your teen seeking approval and perfection? Your child may not be a good candidate for a nose job. One procedure may not be enough and they may continue to seek out perfection by considering other cosmetic procedures.
