Is the gulf oil spill still leaking?

This is a very difficult question. The answer is probably yes, because there have been so many spills. Once the oil spill is dispersed into the ocean, after a long period of time, it may be hard to distinguish from oil from a natural oil seep.

How do you remove oil spills?

That rather depends on the scale of the spill and what it is spilled on. In the home, absorb as much as possible with old cloths, kitchen towel or cat litter, then clean the remainder with a detergent safe for the surface. Large spills are usually broken up with detergents.

How many people have died in the BP oil spill?

The oil spill was roaming every country in my school i heard that from my teachers i really was worried about the people in many different countries and states i was writing a essay and i wrote everything about the oil spill i was very detailed. I have a question " How did the oil roam around the world i really want to know please tell me

What can people do to prevent oil spills?

Oil spills could be reduced in a number of ways. We can build better tankers, we can give people who pilot tankers better training, and possibly do less shipping of oil, if we can cut back on our oil consumption, which would have several advantages in addition to reducing the risk of oil spills.

How did the oil spill affect the land?

If oil gets on you it could kill you. Oil can kill all sea life and plants in the ocean.

How do oil spills affect fish?

It clogs there gills then they suffocate.
Oil is very poisonous and toxic. Not only does it cover and coat the gills suffocating fish and other species, but long term effects are still not really understood. If oil is spilled along the coastal shore or dumped where it can drain into rivers, fish and other aquatic animals can suffer long term illness, birth defects, and with direct exposure they can and do often die. Birds are effected by oil spills as well as fish, and the oil travels up the food chain.

Krill and other food eaten by fish, or further down the food chain are also affected. Generally their populations are lowered, creating food shortages for fish.

What effect does oil spills have on animals?

When oil is spilt it gets on animal of all kinds, they breath it and drink it in their water. The small food plants or small animals that larger animals eat get covered in it, then become sick, and then they are eaten by larger animals. Any animal hunting or trying to feed around it will become covered and can drown, or suffocate They can be blinded, their lungs damaged, and if they ingest too much their internal organs will not recover even if they are rescued. There are organizations that try to help save animals from such spills. But oil spills have devastating effects on the animals that come in contact with it, plus the environment suffers too.

How do you clean up a gas spill in a garage?

Get a bag of cheap, but absorbent cat litter to soak the liquid oil. Scoop it up and put into a double trash bag (so it doesn't leak in you car) and take it to a parts store or an auto service center and see if they will put it with their oil to be recycled. The oil stain on the concrete can be cleaned with Purple Power and a scrub brush, and the residue can be hosed down and flushed outside or into a city storm drain (the water deludes the chemicals enough, so they aren't harmful).

Why do oil spills happen?

oil spills happen because people are careless and and instead of emptying there tank they dump it in the ocean and cars driving on beaches.

Do fires and explosions cause oil spills?

The fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig was caused by the uncontrollable flow of hydrocarbons from the beneath the rig floor, and from the goose-neck (flexible hose) on the derrick, coming in contact with an ignition source, which was most likely the engines which provide power to the rig.

More generally, a blow out does not necessarily cause fires on rigs. The blow out of the Macondo well happen very quickly and at very high rates of gas flow. An oil spill caused by a tanker or storage tanker accident would not normally create a fire.

What are dispersants and do they work to clean up a spill?

Oil molecules naturally cling together. The binding forces are called the molecular cohesive forces. The dispersant mixes with water, helping to break apart the oil on the surface of the water.

It does not really remove the oil from the water. It attempts to reduce the harmful effects of the spill and assist in the natural dispersion or mixing of oil and water.

As shown in one of the links, there are toxic effects of dispersants on coral rocks which have marine biologists very concerned.

See related link. Also, BP has a fact sheet under Joint Information Center webpage on the chemical composition of the dispersants.

How does the government deal with oil spills?

Not much it seems, that is why are are doing the event below. There is a facebook group for it if you would like more information.

The Spill onto the Washington Mall rally grew out of the collective action taken against BP as a result of the explosion. First, we started boycott pages on Facebook. Then we took to the streets, gas stations, and beaches. After many of the boycott managers got to know each other, we thought that more needed to be done. The rally grew out of those conversations.

We never ask who anyone votes for or what party anyone usually backs. We realize it's time for us to stop seeing each as enemies enemies, and that partisanism is a strategy to keep us divided. All are welcome no matter the background, skin color, age, religion, sexual orientation, family status, disability, gender, or species. Bring your children, signs without sticks, tents, food, and voices.

We will meet on the Ellipse, in Washington D.C., next to the White House, from the morning of September 3rd until the morning of the 5th keeping the president's kids up, sorry girls, with speakers, bands, workshops, the Wall of Shame Gallery of bp posters, kids' tents, tabling and more.

We will no longer take a Washington that is so infiltrated by corporate control that we no longer know exactly who runs this country. We will tell them how to vote on bills, and expect strong legislation that suits the will of the people not wealthy campaign contributors and law makers with conflicts of interests between their money sources and the people. BP, you've become the poster child of corporate waste, abuse, incompetence, greed, and class divide.

Gulf residents have begun evacuating of their own accord due to the health effects of toxic air. Let's go for them, the animals, and the planet.
Absolutely NOTHING! The only thing they've done was delay the oil clean-up. We could have had the whole thing taken care of if the government had just stayed out of it.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill?

There was zero evidence that Captain Hazelwood was drunk during his time on the ship. He was not on duty during the collision either. The Third Mate was guiding the ship on autopilot.

The main cause according to the NTSB was the failure to repair the sonar that would have told the helmsman and third mate that the reef was coming up. There is no mention of alcohol being a factor in any NTSB report.

The ship ran aground and the rocks punctured the hull of the ship.

1. Sonar that should have been working was not.

2. The ship was taking a shortcut through very shallow waters with the Capt. downstairs and the needed equipment not functioning. (Sonar)

3. Cheap construction of the ship reducing a margin of safety. They used a single hull system to lower cost. This meant no protection for a single puncture. Double hull laws were soon enacted by the US after this disaster in hopes of preventing or reducing further oil disasters.

How do oil spills happen?

This depends on what oil spill is being referred to: See related questions:

To be honest really they "said" that it started off with an cement job when the oil rig exploded.

The Exxon Valdez Captain was drunk, then he hired someone who did not know how to drive the tanker (the ship) and the employee coast guard who was supposed to be watching the radar was stoned causing the ship to wreck.
There was a big hole in the tube that they use to get oil from and the oil started pouring out.
Methane gas from the drill rushed out, ignited and exploded. The resulting explosion killed 11 people on the rig. A fire broke out on the oil rig.

Because of the fire or the explosion, a wellhead was damaged, which began leaking oil directly into the ocean.

The fail safes that are supposed to protect the environment and people in this type of situation failed.

The oil spill is the result of a well blowout and unfortunately, we still do not have all the answers as to why the well blew out. Halliburton had finished cementing in a production casing and abnormal pressures were detected in the marine riser. There have been a number of reports that a gas bubble rapidly rose in the drill pipe, but this is speculative at present. Many more details will be available after a full inquiry is made.

The blowout and fire occurred on April 20, 2010. See link for a discussion of events.

Is it difficult to clean up different oil spills?

I think its something to do with the fact that oil is thicker that water. So the 2 are separate. If it floats on the surface of the water then that might be why it is difficult to clean up. Also the oil could spread out over a large distance e.g a kilometer. This would mean more boats would have to be used.

How does oil spills hurt the ocean?

It was an oil rig drilling a well for BP exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers. It sank two days later.

The oil slick could become the nation's worst environmental disaster in decades, threatening hundreds of species of fish, birds and other wildlife along the Gulf Coast, one of the world's richest seafood grounds, teeming with shrimp, oysters and other marine life.

Ultimately, the spill could grow much larger than the Valdez because Gulf of Mexico wells tap deposits that hold many times more oil than a single tanker.

Favorable weather allowed for controlled burns of part of the massive Gulf Coast oil slick on Wednesday, while a 100-ton chamber designed to temporarily siphon oil was headed to the accident site and could be ready by Monday.

When will the oil in the gulf run out?

The U.S Energy Information Administration states there are about 1.3 trillion barrels of oil left in the world right now.

According to OPEC, over the next 21 years, the world will average about 36 billion barrels of oil each year.

Thus, barring any new major oil discoveries, the world's oil supply will be effectively gone in 36 years.

A:BP's Statistical Review of World Energy, appears to show that the world still has enough "proven" reserves to provide 40 years of consumption at current rates.

Nobody really knows because the amount of oil reserves fluctuates with the price. As the price of oil goes up, it becomes affordable to extract the more difficult to obtain oil. Advances in technology also increase our ability to extract hard-to-reach oil. Thus, our reserves continually fluctuate.

What will you do if you spill drinks on your guest?

You're in the bar, you've had a few, when all of a sudden you spill someone's drink. Here's what to do.Apologize. If you have just spilled someone's drink, you should apologize immediately and unreservedly. If they are a decent type, this should stop them from getting too agitated.Considering buying a replacement. Have a look at the damage. If you have just knocked their drink out of their hands all over the floor, then you need to replace it immediately. If you've only knocked an ounce of beer or two from the top of their glass, then it shouldn't be a big deal.

  • Most people will be okay about it, and no replacement drink should be required. If they become confrontational, it would be best just to buy them a drink to save you the trouble
Warnings
  • Sometimes even after you've bought someone a replacement drink, they won't let down. They'll go on about your carelessness, how you've ruined their brand new shirt, and about the fact that they are all wet. These people are not worth your time. Either move to a different part of the bar, or leave altogether. After all, there are plenty of other bars out there.
