Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell, who was nicknamed "Old Ironsides," was a regicidal dictator who seized control of power over Great Britain in the mid-1600's after the English Civil War. Why did the Irish hate Oliver cromwell?

Sadly it appears simply because they were Catholics & he was not. While I may admire Cromwells military skill & leadership qualities this is one General I strike from my list of the greats.

Actually he also did it because he was worried that another country was going to join with the Irish and take over England.

^^^

This is absolutely not the case whatsoever.

England had been in a civil war Ireland had supported Charles I against parliament and Cromwell. Cromwell landed in Ireland to destroy the royalist forces and the infamous masscre at Drogheda, for example, consisted almost entirely of English troops and not Irish civilians as is often touted. Indeed, most of the civilian casualties happenned AFTER Cromwell had left Ireland.

Cromwell himself said that while he had no truck with Catholicism he didn't begrudge the man who believed it as long as he didn't take up arms.

What did Oliver Cromwell die of?

Cromwell is thought to have suffered from malaria (probably first contracted while on campaign in Ireland) and from "stone", a common term for urinary/kidney infections. In 1658 he was struck by a sudden bout of malarial fever, followed directly by an attack of urinary/kidney symptoms. A Venetian physician tracked Cromwell's final illness, saying Cromwell's personal physicians were mismanaging his health, leading to a rapid decline and death, which was also hastened by the death of his favorite daughter Elizabeth Cromwell in August at age 29. He died at Whitehall on 3 September 1658, the anniversary of his great victories at Dunbar and Worcester.
