Most athletes do not get paid a set amount. Only gold, silver, and bronze medal winners get paid by the USOC (US Olympic Committee). Gold gets $25,000; Silver, $15,000; and Bronze, $10,000. Other than that, they get paid by sponsors, who pay differently depending on the Olympian.

Technology plays a huge part in track and field. First of all, it is used for making a track. The track needs to be perfectly symmetrical and the exact distance of 400m. All the starting lines on the track need to be even, the staggers need to be far enough apart so that everyone is running the same distance. Next, technology is used for training. Slow motion camera's are used to analyze technique and timers are used for timing workout runs. Technology impacts the actual competitions of track and field through the use of electronic timers, lap timers, and photo finishes. The electronic timers are set off by the starting gun and they take a picture and put a time down when a person's chest crosses the finish line. A photo finish is the picture of everyone crossing the finish line, seeing how close the times are to each other. This is usually used when the winner cannot be distinguished through the timer alone.

There are actually 3 track & field events in which they are either different, or unavailable for women to participate. These are: 1) Mens 110 m hurdles, whereas women participate in 100 m hurdles. 2) Mens 50 Km walk, no such event exists for women. 3) Mens Decathlon, whereas women participate in a Heptathlon.
