Oprah did not start her career expecting to host a talk show; in fact, she began as a news reporter at a Nashville radio station, and eventually worked as a TV news reporter. But while she had a pleasant personality, she had problems remaining neutral and unemotional about some of the news stories she covered. It was suggested to her that rather than covering news, she might be more suited to doing a talk show. She tried it, and found she liked interviewing guests and chatting with them much more than she liked covering news.

Part of her success was identifying a large underserviced audience segment and then selling the "Oprah" product into that market.

There is a whole lot more, about the promotion and maintenance of her image and public profile, and a lot of technical stuff about the excellent planning and production of her shows. And there is also a very large support staff who remain discreetly offstage.

Oprah Winfrey's career in the media industry began as a news anchor and reporter for a television station in Nashville (although she also worked in radio during high school as a newscaster). She was the first black African American woman television news anchor to work in Nashville on the WTVF-TV station at the young age of 19. Winfrey never felt comfortable in her position as a news anchor and only began to enjoy her work when she was moved to the early morning talk show "People are Talking" at WJZ-TV in Baltimore where she was able to be herself and express her own opinions and share her true feelings about topics that moved her.

When Oprah's Mother Gave Birth, Her Original Name was suppose to be "Orpah", from the book of Ruth in the Bible, but the letters got mixed up on her birth certificate so She became Oprah instead.
