During the gap in 2010, Adam Young (Owl City) released his earlier works under the name of Sky Sailing. The name of the album was An Airplane Carried Me To Bed.

There are many metaphors (Ex: "But drenched in Vanilla Twilight...") You can't be drnced in Vanillla Twilight, but it doesn't say like or as, so its a metophor or another example, "The stars lean down to kiss you...." and those are the first lryics!

The Owl City song To the Sky is much like Owl City's other music--borderline nonsensical at times, and yet, very meaningful.

To me, To the Sky is about letting go of your fear and embracing the adventure life has waiting. It's about living life to the fullest and enjoying every moment, knowing that there will be difficulties, but knowing that even in the darkest moments, there is hope.

Well, first of all, not to be a grammer nazi, but it's "so many people", not "so much people".

To answer your question, I'm sure one of the main things is that it's a change from what is considered popular music these days. It's upbeat and soft, and Adam's voice is a quite unique one.

The overall tone, too, is one of silliness and not much sense. Most other songs have a specific point they are centered around, (usually relationships,) and are pretty straightforward, but Fireflies is about what seems, on the surface, to be a type of bug. Closer inspection reveals that it may have many different subject matters, depending on what you want to believe! The opportunity for opinions and metaphors is incredible.

Mainly, however, it all comes down to public mood. It is hard to calculate what type of song the majority of people will like, and believe me, record companies have been trying for years and years! To use some popular phrases with not much actual reasoning behind them, it's catchy, and it's easy to listen to.
