Do the oxygen sensor make noise?
Yes. I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado that was making a rattling/pinging noise. Sounds like somethings loose, like thin metal rattling. Took to dealer, they replaced both oxygen sensors pre-catylitic converter. Sound was gone and acceleration was much better. Did not notice how sluggish the truck was until these were replaced. The noise was very annoying too. The truck was only about 2 or 3 years old when the noise started. Now my truck is about 9 years old and the sound is back. So I will be replacing them again soon.
Can a rear end collision damage the rear oxygen sensors and the fuel system?
yes it can, depending on year of vehicle. MID 90'S ON UP HAVE FUEL SHUT OFF RELAYS. upon impact they are designed to (trip) and avoid possible leaks, or ignition of fire upon impact. if vehicle will not start after impact check owners manual for location of fuel cut off switch and reset. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK LINES,( fuel system ) for leaks IMMEDIATELY.

Do you have to replace the oxygen sensor?
I have a 1998 Malibu and in my experience, YES you want to replace the Oxygen sensor when it starts giving problems. The car will sputter especially when going up a steep incline and it has sputtered on me while pulling out into traffic. When it hesitates, it can easily cause you to be in an accident. I pulled out into traffic with plenty of room, but the car stuttered and I was almost hit by the car speeding towards me. It is very dangerous because you do not know before hand when it will stutter. It does not do it everytime. I recommend to definitely change it. If you look in the maintance book on the Malibu, you will see a check list of troubleshooting. Once you go through the list and check all of the items, the car should stop sputtering.
What does the oxygen sensor do on a car?
It is the primary measurement device for the fuel control computer in your car to know if the fuel-air mixture is too rich or too lean. The O2 sensor is active anytime it is hot enough, but the computer only uses this information in the closed loop mode. Closed loop is the operating mode where all engine control sensors including the oxygen sensor are used to get the optimum fuel economy, with lowest emissions and good power.
