As with any story-telling medium, the start of an opera begins with a solid story which contains a beginning, a middle and an end.

The old guy in the wheel chair is Raoul de Chagny. The old lady is Meg Giry I think. If not, it's Madame Giry.

Christine loves both the Phantom and Raoul, but eventually chooses Raoul after the Phantom's display of selfishness and inhumanity.

Lets' examine Raoul's character he was physically attractive, rich, he had all the comforts but in his heart he could not understand Christine's love for the Phantom. He was deeply jealous of him, he wanted him dead. Innerly Raoul was just as ugly as the Phantom's outside appearance.

Christine was innerly beauty as she was on the outside, she saw beauty in the Phantom through his magnetic singing and speaking voice. She could not help but being draw to him for she viewed music above all else until she saw the horrific face of the Phantom. She was torn between two men, Raoul and the Phantom, they both represent a paradox. Raoul did not understand the beauty of music although he spent money to listen to it. He could not give her music. Phantom could give her music but not the comfortable environment that she needed to live.

The word is protagonist, in effect the main or lead character, not type-cast as hero or villain. it would have to be the title character, the Phantom himself.
