Why does a popcorn pop?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Within minutes, a teardrop-shaped kernel no larger than a pea can magically mushroom into a fluffy treat that's many times its original volume. The tasty secret: water. Each popcorn kernel contains a hard outer shell and a starchy inside surrounding a dab of water. When the kernels are heated to about 450 degrees Fahrenheit (232 degrees Celsius), the pocket of water turns into steam and expands within the tough casing. Like blowing up a balloon, as more and more steam forms, the pressure against the outer shell increases. When the shell can no longer contain the building pressure, it finally gives way with the classic pop. The kernel turns inside-out, revealing the softened starch that makes up the white spongy part of your favorite movie snack.

Can hamsters eat butter popcorn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It would not form part of the natural diet and is thus probably not good for them.

Feed your hamsters proper hamster food and provide it with water. It will also need hard things to chew on (not food) so that it can wear its teeth down because they grow continuously.

If your hamster has eaten a little bit of butter by accident, don't worry it will probably be OK, just try not to let it happen again.

Why do we need popcorn?

people eat popcorn, because movie theaters sell popcorn.

movie theaters sell popcorn, because it is cheap and easy to make, so they can make a good amount of money on it

For some reason watching TV makes people hungry and popcorn is cheap and easy to make and that is why movie theatre's sell it.

People started eating popcorn at movies during the Great Depression, because it was cheap and easy to make. I guess it's a sort of tradition and Americans have acquired the taste after a while.

1. The unpopped kernels are cheap and take up little space in storage.

2. The smell is strong and universally pleasant: as soon as you enter the cinema the first thing you notice is the smell and have to consider buying it.

3. Little equipment is necessary to produce it fresh: a popping machine, bags, and melted butter.

4. Easy to grab and eat during movies without distracting you from watching it during the movie.

5. People crave salty foods because salt was a scare but necessary mineral for our Neolithic ancestors.

What is the difference of popcorn to regular corn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Both popcorn and regular corn come from exactly the same plant, but in order for popcorn to "pop", it must be dried out completely before using. This way the trapped air in the kernel expands quickly when heated, resulting in a popped kernel.

What role does oil play in the preparation of popcorn?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The type of oil affects the taste of the popcorn, and you need an oil that can be heated to high temperatures. Popcorn pops when it reaches a temperature of 450°F (232°C). Movie theaters frequently use coconut oil which is said to be the best-tasting, but some now offer popcorn for the health-conscious, such as popcorn made with canola oil or air-popped popcorn. Other oils that can be used to pop popcorn are sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil, and soybean oil. Avoid oils that will smoke at popcorn popping temperatures, such as olive oil or grape seed oil.

How does the microwave know when your popcorn is done?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The microwave doesn't actually know when the popcorn is done. You have to listen to the slowing of the popcorn popping sound. When a microwave oven has a "popcorn" button, it is really just setting the microwave for the ideal temperature and time for popping microwave popcorn. It does not actually know when the popcorn is done.

3.5 oz of popcorn equals how many cups?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The best way to calculate the amount of pop corn you are eating, is this equation: Every gram of hydrocarbate is equivalant to 4 Calories.3.5 Oz is 99 grams ,so here we have 99gramsX4calories per gram= 396 calories. Now according to american diebetes association ( http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/treatment-and-care/ask-the-expert/ask-the-dietitian/archives/is-popcorn-a-healthy-snack.html ) every 3 cups of Pop corn is less than 100 calories , so per say lets say 3 cups is 100 calories, therefore 396 claories over 100 claories make up 3.96 servings of 3 cups, so 3.96x3= 11.88 or 12 cups. This is just popcorn alone, adding oil or butter adds to the calories, and again if you convert those extra calories to the equivalance of cups ( gram, calorie ratio) you will then have a figure of how many cups of pop corn exactly you have eaten.
