Roman Catholic AnswerPriests are human, just like you and me; as the Italian grandmother of a childhood friend of mine used to say, "they are only the flesh and the blood". Every human being on this earth stands before God as a sinner. As Jesus said, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Catholic priests are called to a high standard, but not higher than any of us. We just expect more of them. Another mother of a childhood friend told me that we should always look at others, particularly priests with the eyes of charity. They have so much responsibility, and are accountable to so many different people.

That said, there is no excuse for child abuse, none; and everyone must be accountable for their sins. Even so, we must never paint an entire group of people with the brush of prejudice, especially to accuse priests of the heinous crimes of a few. Nor think that because the media has exposed the crimes of a few that it is not to be found elsewhere, among other people. That is just inexcusable.

The vast majority of priests are kind, caring, knowledgeable, and doing their very best to save you and me; to serve God as well as they are capable.

Can Catholic priests conduct funerals?

Yes, as death and burial have deep theological significance for Christians, there are three ritual moments in the liturgy: the vigil, the funeral liturgy proper, and the rite of committal - all of these require (or should have) a Priest.

Although the funeral liturgy is not a Sacrament, it does present the aspect of a kind of sacramental participation in the paschal mystery. Who would not want their Spiritual advisor and/or Confessor with them at a difficult time?

What does vocation to the priesthood mean?

To have a vocation is to have a specific "calling" or disposition towards the religious life. This means that God has granted the soul the grace of a vocation, or the invitation to intimately participate in ministry of His Church or to live, pray and work closer to Himself by living a life that is removed from the world. A vocation to the priesthood is a specific calling a young man feels to enter a seminary in order to train to become a priest. This calling may be simply a desire to serve as a priest, an intellectual resolution based on self evaluation, a religious experience (though these are rare and not to be looked for), or a recommendation by a parish priest or retreat master. A vocation to the priesthood is confirmed when the candidate enters the religious state and when the Church calls him to approach for ordination.

How come Catholic priest were the only ones to read the Bible?

They were not the ONLY ones, they were just the most likely, for two reasons, 1) they had a Bible available to them at all time, primarily for the Church readings, and for teaching, and 2) they were about the only ones who could read-the only ones with an education. Also, remember that for most of the centuries, of the Church's existence, books were incredibly expensive. It would take an entire herd of sheep to produce enough vellum to produce one Bible, and a bunch of educated monks years of steady labor to copy a Bible. One Bible was worth more than most people earned in a lifetime, and even if they could buy one, they would have to spend years learning to read, etc. However, the Church made them available to all the people who could read, this is were the practice came of chaining Bibles to the lecturn in the Church. They were so incredibly expensive that unscruplous thieves would not scruple to steal a Bible, if nothing else for their valuable gems that were often inlaid in the covers. The practice of chaining them meant that they could be left unguarded all day for anyone to come in and read them. Often parish priests took lads under their tutelage to teach them to read and write, in order, primarily, so that they could read the Bible. The Catholic Church deserves our praise, admiration, and thanks for the centuries in which they not only produced the Bible, but safeguarded it, copied it for century after century so that we, hundreds of years later, would be able to actually have a copy of this written word of God. There is no way in which we can thank the Catholic Church, and her generations of monks, for this immense gift for all of us.
