Protestantism

Generally associated with the protests against the Catholic Church and its methods, Protestants follow Jesus Christ. One of the early scholars to lead the break from the established church was Martin Luther. If you have questions about anything to do with Protestantism, this is place to ask them.

Why was the Protestant church formed?

The Protestant denominations developed when the authority of the pope as head of the Church was refused. Once the visible head and authority of the Church was ignored, others stepped in, unwittingly becoming pope-like themselves as they sought to lead new movements, however, as with the case of all revolutionary movements, once the legitimate head is removed, organization and discipline break down. With no one able to claim supreme authority or to act as a judge in spiritual or administrative matters, doctrine and religious discipline became confused and Protestant sects began to divide according to the mandate of what each person decided was right or to what they were willing to submit according to their own conscience, understanding or personal faith. Basically, human nature being what it is led to the immense fragmentation of what now constitutes the Protestant faiths.

As a prime example, Martin Luther, the Augustinian monk who first sought to reform the Church and who ended up leaving the direction of the pope, founded the first thoroughly Protestant sect. When, however, he started to lay down the way the Church should be, some of his early followers turned on him saying, "Shut up, pope of Wittenburg!" and went to found sects of their own. And so on.

Why is a Protestant cross different from a Catholic Cross?

Possibly because Protestants feel that Genuflection is a superstitious response by worshippers having seen the Priest give the sign of the blessing in the name of the Triune God. As the cross is empty Christ no longer being there, it is not considered seemly to make the sign of the cross as this possibly disrespects the risen Christ - although to Orthodox and Roman Catholics it is presumably a sign of respect.

Is there a bible with more than one translations in it?

Answer
The original King James Version of the Bible was published in 1611.

The first edition of the Authorized Version from which the Apocrypha was omitted appeared in 1666.

In 1769 the Oxford University Press published an edition of the King James version in which many small changes were made: (i) greater and more regular use of italics; (ii) minor changes in the text; (iii) the adoption of what was then modern spelling; (iv) changes in the marginal notes and references; (v)correction of printers' errors.

There is now available a Revised King James Version which, according to Interpreting Christian History, was written in 1885.

The New King James Version is a modern translation, but significantly differs from the original KJV since it is not based on the same text. The same is true of the Revised KJV.

Is the pentacostal church protestant?

There are sects considered to be pentecostal that are not orthodox due to the fact of their doctrine about God. The orthodox view of God is that of absolute uniqueness, or 'the only true God' and that God is triune, or is three persons simultaneously. The sect called United Pentecostal Church denies that doctrine. The Assemblies of God sect affirms a belief in the triunity of God.

What does the evangelical presbyterian church believe about predestination?

The Church of England's official position is outlined in Article 17 of the 39 Articles, the text of which is below. The position is essentially Augustinian/Calvinist, but the Article speaks only of "single predestination" to life, and is silent regarding "double predestination" (i.e. reprobation).

XVII. Of Predestination and Election.

Predestination to Life is the everlasting purpose of God, whereby (before the foundations of the world were laid) he hath constantly decreed by his counsel secret to us, to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in Christ out of mankind, and to bring them by Christ to everlasting salvation, as vessels made to honour. Wherefore, they which be endued with so excellent a benefit of God, be called according to God's purpose by his Spirit working in due season: they through Grace obey the calling: they be justified freely: they be made sons of God by adoption: they be made like the image of his only-begotten Son Jesus Christ: they walk religiously in good works, and at length, by God's mercy, they attain to everlasting felicity.

As the godly consideration of Predestination, and our Election in Christ, is full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort to godly persons, and such as feel in themselves the working of the Spirit of Christ, mortifying the works of the flesh, and their earthly members, and drawing up their mind to high and heavenly things, as well because it doth greatly establish and confirm their faith of eternal Salvation to be enjoyed through Christ as because it doth fervently kindle their love towards God: So, for curious and carnal persons, lacking the Spirit of Christ, to have continually before their eyes the sentence of God's Predestination, is a most dangerous downfall, whereby the Devil doth thrust them either into desperation, or into wretchlessness of most unclean living, no less perilous than desperation.

Furthermore, we must receive God's promises in such wise, as they be generally set forth to us in Holy Scripture: and, in our doings, that Will of God is to be followed, which we have expressly declared unto us in the Word of God.

Do Presbyterians use the rosary?

Is Jeremy Sumpter Christian?

There's no public record indicating that Jeremy Sumpter has any affiliation with Mormonism.

Did Catholic and protestants come from Christianity?

The word "catholic" means "universal". At one time, all Christians were Catholic. The Catholic Church was established to keep Christianity unified and organised so that all believers worshipped the same thing and didn't go off the rails.

Catholic comment: Actually, the Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, it was not established to keep Christianity unified and organised, it IS Christianity. Our Blessed Lord established the Catholic Church, sent the Holy Spirit to guide it until the end of the world, and promised to be with it until the end. He promised that it would be one. All of the Orthodox and protestants are people who LEFT the one true Church that Our Blessed Lord established, no matter how much rationalizing they do:

However, first of all the Eastern Europeans split from the Catholic church to form the Orthodox Church. Then many Germanic countries (such as part of Germany, Holland, Sweden and later England) broke off to become Protestants.

The Protestants were started by a German priest called Martin Luther. Luther never intended to cause a revolution, but became angry at the corruption in the Church, and was unable to live according to the moral teaching of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. Thus he started his own religion which did not call him to account for his sins. One of his most famous quotes: Martin Luther: "Sin Boldly - "No sin can separate us from Him, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands of times each day" Protestantism, as started by Martin Luther is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches:

13. If you are a preacher of mercy, do not preach an imaginary but the true mercy. If the mercy is true, you must therefore bear the true, not an imaginary sin. God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners. Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong, but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world. We will commit sins while we are here, for this life is not a place where justice resides. We, however, says Peter (2. Peter 3:13) are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth where justice will reign. It suffices that through God's glory we have recognized the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. No sin can separate us from Him, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands of times each day. Do you think such an exalted Lamb paid merely a small price with a meager sacrifice for our sins? Pray hard for you are quite a sinner.

This is the exact opposite of what Paul taught in Romans 6:1&2.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?

Whose protests started the Protestant?

Martin Luther began the protestant revolution

Are protestants monotheistic?

Some Protestants are definatiely monotheists such as the Unitarians who affirm that God is one person. This is in contrast to Trinitarianism, which defines God as three persons coexisting in one being. This is similar to the Hindus who see their many gods as being merely avatars (facets) of the main god Vishnu and he is one of three main aspects of god. Christians regard Hindus as polytheists on this basis.

What are raptures?

Another answer from our community:

the rapture is the taking of Gods bride (the church) here is a verse: Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

and speak with other tongues

that's the only way you will get to heaven

......................................................................................................................................

The Rapture is when all Christians disappear off the face of the earth and go to heaven. All non-christians will face seven years of tribulation before Christ comes to judge everyone.

That is what will happen. But it will be a bit more dramatic than that. An army of angels will come down. There will be a loud noise followed by trumpets being played. We will all confess that He is the only God, rather you are a believer or not. Then Jesus will descend upon us. He will take all of the Christians with Him, back to heaven where we will live with Him, for Him, and eternally. No one is aware of when this will happen. So get saved before it's too late.

Answer: Rapture comes from the Latin word "Raptura", which means "caught up". This phrase comes from the verse in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 that says "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." (Read all of 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18). The word "rapture" usually refers to the doctrine that those people who are Christians (those who have realized that they are sinners before God, and realized that there is a price for their sin, but Jesus died to pay that price for them, and have accepted God's free gift of salvation through what Jesus did on the cross for them - Romans 6:23) will one day be taken home with the Lord. They will not die or ever experience death according to the Bible, but will just be taken away one day. They will join Jesus in the air when He returns, and will receive "glorified bodies" - bodies that will never die or decay - and live forever with Him.

The rapture is when God comes back to earth and captures all Christians, but will leave all siners to suffer 7 years of hell (Tribulation). When God comes back to earth there will be a natural disaster to capture all Christians, the first time God came back to earth he captured Christians with a Flood (Noahs Ark), the next time it will be by Fire. No one will ever know when God will come back to capture Christians, the bible says ther will be signs of deprestion before God comes back to earth, but you will never know when it will be. So the best thing you can do is get saved, worship God, and live a Christian life and you are sured to be captured by God, tacken to heaven away from harm and not have to live the tribulation!!!!!!!

the rapture could happen any year, month, weak, hour, minute or even second. god will come! anybody that isn't a christian will have a 7 year chance to repent if u don't then u will face god himself! even christians have to face god so be ready brothers and sisters cause it realy could happen at any moment. it could happen right after im done tyoing this.

..............................................................................................................................

This is a really a big Question... So here is a second school of thought:

If your asking is the Word Rapture found in the bible?

No.

Where does the term come from?

The Origin of the term is found Philip Doddridge and John Gill in their commentaries.

So what scriptures are there used to back it up?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 is the most conman: (NIV I dont care which translation Googled it this was the first one that came up hate NIV? Feel free to look it up in your favourite Translations) 13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

The others used mainly talk about Christ's coming. EG:

1Thessalonians 1:10 (it says Jesus delivered us nothing else.)

Hebrews 9:28 (again it is about waiting for Jesus and not thing to rush things along)

Will The Whole Planet be destroyed?

Some People Believe that the Whole World will be destroyed, If this is the question is then According to the Word of God the Bible The Earth will never be destroyed, See:

Psalms 104:5;

(NIV) He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

(KJV) Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

(TNIV)He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

Psalms 37:11

(TNIV)But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

(NCV)People who are not proud will inherit the land and will enjoy complete peace.

(KJV) But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

(NWT) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

(ASV) But the meek shall inherit the land, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalms 37:29

(ERV) Good people will get the land God promised and will live on it forever.

(DARBY) The righteous shall possess the land, and dwell therein for ever.

(ASV) The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell therein for ever.

(KJV) The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

Revelation 11:18

(NCV)The people of the world were angry,

but your anger has come.

The time has come to judge the dead,

and to reward your servants the prophets

and your holy people,

all who respect you, great and small.

The time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth!"

(NKJV) The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,

And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,

And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,

And those who fear Your name, small and great,

And should destroy those who destroy the earth."

(NLV) The people who do not know God have become angry with You. Now it is time for You to be angry with them. It is time for the dead to stand before You and to be judged. It is time for the servants You own who are the early preachers and those who belong to You to get the reward that is coming to them. It is time for the important people and those not important who honour Your name to get the pay that is coming to them. It is time to destroy those who have made every kind of trouble on the earth."

For the Earth be destroyed would make God a liar given the promises made at Psalms 37:11,29 and 104:5 and we all know what Hebrews 6:18 says (just look it up). Would Make Revelation 11:18 Half Pointless. Why would a loving God (1John 1:8) who is full of justices Judge people harshly for something that didn't matter cause he was going to do it anyway. Secondly in Revelation it says at that time the dead will be judged... Interesting isn't it? Oh yes...

When Jesus Does start the Armageddon Will the people will there be blood up to our Sholders/necks/roof-top/what-evers as some churches teach?

No, Now have 2 bits of logic and some scriptures to apply here now scriptures first:

God promised never to flood the earth again:

Genesis 9:8-11

(TNIV)Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9"I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you-the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you-every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."

if it were up to the necks or shoulders well who's necks/shoulders/which roof? Personally I am 6ft2 and a strong swimmer, if it were up to the necks of people who are 4ft7-5ft3 then I should be fine I could just walk/swim to building and climb on the roof and live of my secret stash of Twinkies in my roof for the next ever distilling the blood Macgyver style.

Hight is subjective would flooding the Earth inst smooth no matter if it were 9 feet high that would be from sea level it would be as affective or humane as sending angle with blood help.

Does the Bible Contain every detail of how the War of Armageddon will pan out?

No not every, It tells us the winning and looks at what will happen after in so many ways we'd need a whole web site just to cover it. As long your church is willing to refine its teaching you the bible how to use it, to reason on the basis of the teaching, are not a slave of traditions and not involved in wars (wars don't encourage love as Christian must love See: Matthew 5:43-48, Isaiah 2:4)

Remember to be Like the Berean Christians mentioned at acts 17:11 (NLT) "And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth." They Questioned Paul and Silas and checked there statements against other scriptures Your welcome to do the same. As the Bereans did we must also Search the scriptures for our answers. Remember 2 Timothy 3:16 "(KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

(I have used a random smattering of translations please look the quoted scriptures up in your favourite translations.)

How did evangelical Protestant change their doctrines to appeal to new social conditions in the early decades of the nineteenth century?

The evangelical protestant did change their messages that appealed to the poor in society that helped them appeal to the new social conditions in the 19th century.

What are the seven extra books in the Catholic bible?

Protestant answerThey are called Bible Apocrypha, or deuterocanonical by Catholics.

They are ancient writings that were not accepted into the Bible canon. They were not able to be validated as "inspired by God".

Some have very informative historical information.

For more information, see attached links.

Catholic answerThere are no "extra" books in the Bible, the Old Testament is the same as the Bible that the Jews used for five centuries, it was translated into Greek in the fourth century B.C. as the Septuagint, was used by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. Most of the quotes in the New Testament are from the Septuagint. The New Testament was composed by the Catholic Church under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and, guided by that same Spirit, was put together as the New Testament in the late fourth century A.D. Twelve centuries later, Martin Luther trashed the Deuterocanical books of the Old and New Testaments. The other protestant "reformers" would not stand for the latter and replaced the deuterocanonicals in the New Testament, they also replaced the deuterocanonicals of the Old Testament but in a separate sections. Centuries later, other protestants removed them and started to call them "apocrypha" which they have never been. Apocrypha writings pretend to be Sacred Scripture but have never been accepted by Christ's Church. The Deuterocanonicals are every bit as canonical as the rest of the Bible. Modern day protestants, not knowing their history, refer to them as "apocrypha" not realizing that they have been part of the canon since the fourth century before Christ, and are frequently referred to by Christ. They are called the Deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament. Please note, at the fifth link below, the Deutercanonical books in the New Testament, that link takes you to a page which lists all the references to the Deuterocanonical books that are given in the New Testament proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus Christ used and referenced the Deuterocanon frequently.

Are Adventists the same as Seventh-day Adventists?

The word "adventist" refers to anyone awaiting the second coming of Christ.

The word Adventist is the also the official shortened form of Seventh-day Adventist Church which is distinguished by the three angels message, observance of the sabbath and principles underlaid in the Bible

25. Second Coming of Christ:

The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church, the grand climax of the gospel. The Saviour's coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfillment of most lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that Christ's coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed, and we are therefore exhorted to be ready at all times. (Titus 2:13; Heb. 9:28; John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; Matt. 24:14; Rev. 1:7; Matt. 24:43, 44; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; 2 Thess. 1:7-10; 2:8; Rev. 14:14-20; 19:11-21; Matt. 24; Mark 13; Luke 21; 2 Tim. 3:1-5; 1 Thess. 5:1-6.)

20. Sabbath:

The beneficent Creator, after the six days of Creation, rested on the seventh day and instituted the Sabbath for all people as a memorial of Creation. The fourth commandment of God's unchangeable law requires the observance of this seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest, worship, and ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice of Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of delightful communion with God and one another. It is a symbol of our redemption in Christ, a sign of our sanctification, a token of our allegiance, and a foretaste of our eternal future in God's kingdom. The Sabbath is God's perpetual sign of His eternal covenant between Him and His people. Joyful observance of this holy time from evening to evening, sunset to sunset, is a celebration of God's creative and redemptive acts. (Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 20:8-11; Luke 4:16; Isa. 56:5, 6; 58:13, 14; Matt. 12:1-12; Ex. 31:13-17; Eze. 20:12, 20; Deut. 5:12-15; Heb. 4:1-11; Lev. 23:32; Mark 1:32.)

Another answer

Nothing. Adventist is just another name for Seventh-day Adventist.

What are facts about the protestant church?

. Stated by Martin Luther [not Mr. King].

. Any non Catholic christian is Protestant.

. It is one of the 3 major branches of Christianity.

. It was formed in 1517.

. Martin Luther did not mean to start another major branch of Christianity, but to reform Catholic church.

Do protestants have an altar in their church?

Yes and no. The table of worship focus is called either an altar or a communion table. Some sanctuaries have both. "Altar" originally meant a place for sacrifice. While important, for Protestants the hope of the resurrection takes precedence, and Christ's ongoing presence is symbolized by Holy Communion, or the Eucharist.

What is protestant church?

How long is a piece of string? The protestant church is incredibly diverse. For most, the interior is simliar - or the same - as a Roman Cathoic church but with slight differences. There will be, at one end, an altar (called more a communion table, or 'Lord's table' in protestant churches) a communion rail, a pulpit, a lectern from where The Bible is read, pews or seats, and some means of making music - usually an organ. At the other end, near the door, is a font for baptism. These are the basics, but there are variations. For example, in a Methodist Church (and some other protestant denominations), the pulpit is usually the central focal point rather than the communion table, as Methodists regard the Word and teaching through the sermon as more important than the sacrament of Holy Communion. In Baptist churches the font is replaced with a baptistry - a deep well in the floor where baptism by full immersion is practised. In high church Anglicanism the church wil resemble almost exactly a Roman Catholic church with all the basic features with the addition of altar lamps, and an aumbry or tabernacle where the conscecrated bread and wine is stored. Low church Anglicanism will have churches that are more simple and more like methodist churches. Many of the oldest Anglican churches are identical with Roman catholic churches as they were of courses, Roman catholic churches before the split with Rome in the 15th C. But whatever is inside the church building, let's not forget that the Church is actually the people and not the building. In my locality in the UK, we have churches meeting in ancient buildings dating from the 11th century and before, in modern purpose built buildings, in cinemas, schools and even a pub(bar). It's the quality of the worship that matters, and what goes on in a person's heart, than what is inside a man-made building.

Can a divorced Protestant be married in the Catholic church?

Answer getting married

Yes they can get married, but most will have to take some classes first.

Answer

Usually the non-Catholic person would be required to convert to Catholicism first.

Wrong, The Church only recommends, but will never require anyone to covert to Catholicism first.

THE Answer:

The couple must take Pre-Cana Classes . Most importantly , the non-Catholic must promise to baptize and raise the children Catholic and to never impede the Catholic spouse from practicing their faith or teaching the children. That's it for any baptized Christian . For non-Christians , there must be a special dispensation.

What language did john wycliffe translate the bible into?

Born around the years 1328-1330, John Wycliffe was sent to Oxford University, where he rose to become master of Balliol College by 1361 and, some years later, a doctor of theology. His familiarity with English law and canon law was not merely the result of his interest in the subject, but of a deep-rooted desire to see liberties defended and maintained. With some of his associates, John Wycliffe set about translating the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English. To use the original languages would then have been unheard of in England. Greek had been neglected for centuries, and Wycliffe had no knowledge of it. Between 1379 and 1382 the work of translation moved ahead with great urgency. At the same time, Wycliffe furthered the teaching and training of itinerant preachers who traveled through the land with the Word of God. Likely, the Christian Greek Scripture portion of the translation was completed by 1382. Doubtless, translation of the Hebrew Scriptures was then in progress under the supervision of Nicholas of Hereford, a zealous follower of Wycliffe. John Purvey, another helper in the work, was Wycliffe's secretary for some years. The resulting translation was very literal in its renderings, even to the point of ignoring the idiom of the English language. But it did put the entire Bible within reach of common people for the first time. For many years John Wycliffe had been convinced that the Lord's Supper was a most important occasion. In 1381 his desire to separate Church teaching and tradition from what is taught in the Holy Scriptures resulted in his attack on the idea of transubstantiation. First propounded in the ninth century, this doctrine held that, upon consecration by the priest, the bread and wine actually changed into the substance of the body and blood of Christ. Wycliffe's argument rested upon the passages in the Gospels and Paul's writings bearing directly on the issue, and upon many other related texts. For example, when Jesus said, "I am the true vine," he did not mean that he had become a literal vine, or that a literal vine had been changed into the body of Christ. (John 15:1) Rather, this was an illustration used to teach an important truth. In exposing tradition by means of God's Word, Wycliffe emphasized that this teaching of transubstantiation was not part of the doctrine of the early church, and that even Jerome held to the Biblical concept. Of all the outspoken writings and preachings by Wycliffe, this one was perhaps the hardest for the Church to bear. The doctrine of the Mass was a principal means by which the people were held in subjection to the authority of the Church. Even his strong ally, John of Gaunt, went to Oxford seeking to silence Wycliffe on the matter, but without success. The Peasants' Revolt in 1381 aroused still more opposition to Wycliffe. Thousands of insurgents under Wat Tyler and other leaders marched on London, burning and killing and finally executing the archbishop of Canterbury before they were defeated. In part, Wycliffe was blamed for this rebellion, for it was claimed that his teachings had stirred up the people to question the authority of their superiors. Although this claim was without foundation, the event brought to power a new archbishop, William Courtenay. While bishop of London, this man had already acted against Wycliffe. In 1382, as archbishop, Courtenay summoned a council that condemned Wycliffe's doctrines as heretical and erroneous. Wycliffe was dismissed from the University of Oxford, and a decree was issued setting forth the penalty of excommunication for anyone who preached the condemned doctrines, or even listened to someone who did. Excerpts from the Watchtower of July 1st 1980 p. 24 "John Wycliffe, Champion of the Bible

Answer2: It was in the late fourteenth century that the first English-language translation was produced. The name Wycliffe is attached to that version based on the Latin Vulgate. Just how much John Wycliffe actually translated is unknown today. It is certain, however, that there was fierce opposition to the translating work. Wycliffe and his associates incurred the bitter hatred of the religious authorities. Courageous men attempted to translate the Bible into the language of the common people, so that these could read and understand it, they were persecuted, often to the death. In the fourteenth century C.E., John Wycliffe first translated the Bible from Latin into English. But the Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury, England, described him as "that pestilent wretch . . . the son of the old Serpent," and some years after his death, opponents of the Bible dug up his remains, burned them and threw his ashes into the river Swift
