That depends on personal preference. Most people, however, find that solving the white side first makes it easier to see.

=====
This morning I would have given you the exact same answer. Its only rational, or so I thought.
I took my cube today, from a perfectly solved state, scrambled it up, and tried solving it. I ended up with just one edge piece backwards. I dont know how. It makes no sense and I cannot imagine a way to fix it. I stumbled across this Answers.com question/answer when I was researching this "error".

Chandler White solving the Rubik's Cube?
no way he is to stupid and self centered to solve a rubiks cube. im serious i know people. he might be the smarteset kid on earth but there is no way he could solve a rubiks cube!
I'd say it is safe. It is pretty hard to take it apart into small pieces without using some kind of tool. BUT IF YOU ARE REALLY CAUTIOUS, LIKE COMPARING IT TO A RUBBER DUCK, THE POINTS OF THE CUBE MIGHT HURT SOMEONE A LITTLE IF THROWN HARD ENOUGH.(-:
I've known some kids with epilepsy who try to solve the cubes too fast who have caused themselves to go into seizures. If you give the cube to someone with that disorder be sure to keep an eye on them when they are trying to solve it. I only know this because I volunteer at a clinic where one of the nurses brought one in thinking it would be a fun distraction. About an hour later one of the kids seized and we couldn't find out what triggered his episode until we were able to control him and he said what happened. Needless to say, we removed the cube immediately.
Also, the other danger you might run into is worsening a kid's self-esteem. Kids today already have it quite rough. And a child who "can't solve one more problem" in his life may be too much for him/her. Rubik's cubes are by nature very difficult to solve. The colors and simplicity of movement shouldn't fool you. If your child is on the brink of having issues giving him/her a puzzle they can't finish could push them to suicidal thoughts. So be cautious in that regard too.
What are the characteristics of the Rubik's Cube?
It is approximately 185 cubic centimeters (cc), has 26 individual cubes, six different colored faces, and has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations.
I don't think it's anything. I put a link to something that might be related in the related links section. There were other hits when I searched for it, but several of them were pretty clearly meaningless new age claptrap.
Is there such thing as a 9x9x9 rubik's cube?
Currently (DEC 09) there are 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, 6x6x6, 7x7x7, and 9x9x9 mass-produced rubik's cubes.
The 6x6x6, and 7x7x7, are available from either V-Cubes (original inventor) or QJ (Chinese Knock-Off), and they both have future plans to make larger ones. QJ has also built a 9x9x9, bu V-Cubes plans to build everything up to 11x11x11, which is so far the only source to publically announce the coming of the 10x10x10. Puzzle-building masters have made their own 8x8x8 (2 in the world), 9x9x9, 11x11x11 (1 in the world, Tony Fisher), and 12x12x12 (1 in the world, Leslie Lee). However, Gabbasoft Cube simulator allows you to solve virtual cubes up to 20x20x20 in size.

How do you solve the yj fluctuation puzzle cube from japan?
Structurally, it's exactly the same as a 3x3. It caught me off guard at first because there are 7 face slices instead of 9, but it has the same number of "cubies", if you could call them that. Once you get your mind wrapped around which pieces are which in relation to a 3x3, start solving it exactly the same way, cross, corners, f2l, etc. When you get to the F2L, you first have to make sure the corners are in the right rotation before you start solving the f2l (this part is a bit tricky) when you get to the last layer, it starts to get real hairy. To be able to tell if a piece is "facing up" or not, you have to rotate the top face and check each piece against the f2l. if the piece matches up, it is facing up. once you solve the top layer, you shouldn't have any problems if you did the rest of it right. once you get to PLL, two centers might get messed up on the last algorithm. I ran into this on my first solve. I got the cube like 2-3 days ago and have only solved it twice because the centers are always in the wrong rotation. solving a 3x3 with pictures on it helps to grasp this concept.
in short, it's pretty much a 3x3, but it's a real pain to wrap your mind around, and then get the centers right. I almost threw it out the window a couple times.
