What is the meaning of one long blast on a ship's horn?

One long blast can mean one of many things:

1) I am turning to starboard

2) In a situation of restricted view (ie turning a blind corner on a river) it's a warning signal to warn other vessels of your presence

3) In fog it is a general fog signal for vessels over usually over 12meters underway (this is repeated every 2 minutes)

Right or left side of a ship?

The sides of any ship are "the hull".

What is the left side of a ship called why not use left and right?

Define left side of a ship? Left and right are the sides of the human body and you relate it to the body. The problem is that left and right change depending on which way you are facing.

If you are facing the front of the ship the port side is to your left and the starboard side is on your right. By using port and starboard, you are avoiding confusion when talking to other people.

When is the best time of year to sail from LA to Seattle?

Debarking from LA I'd probably start in Late Spring so it's not all light air sailing to first Pt. Conception (where it will pick up some) to San Franciso area (where it will pick up more). Ideally, I'd pass San Fran around early summer and hope for nice warm days, crisp evenings, and no serious tropical or arctic weather, even from afar. It'd be nice to make landfall in Seattle in July. This would allow some time to relax but still set a pace.

Who is responsible for avoiding collision between two vessels?

Rules of the road. Just as with cars, there are rules set up so that one person realizes they are in the wrong and can take corrective action. For example, with boats and cars, if you are backing up you have no rights and have to take the responsility to make sure there are no others in your path.

Interestingly, rule #1 is "Avoid collisions at all costs."So even if you are in the right as far as the rules of the road go, if you do nothing to avoid a collision, and a collision results, you can be held equally responsible for not following rule #1.

Who sailed in a yacht around the world?

Many people have sailed in a yacht around the world. The youngest was Robin Lee Graham, who sailed around the world in a sailboat at the age of 16. He took 5 years sailing around the world and even found and married his wife while on the trip. I believe he started his trip in 1968 and ended in 1973. If you are looking for non-stop sailing, there are races for solo non-stop circumnavigation. Circumnavigation is the sailor's term for "around the world". The first man to complete a solo circumnavigation was Joshua Slocum in 1898. There's even a Joshua Slocum Society for sailors who sail around the world.
