The story goes that at a meeting of its leaders, someone said that they were like a great volunteer army, to which William Booth, the Army's founder, replied something like: I am not a volunteer for I am compelled to do what I do. We are not a volunteer army, we are a Salvation Army. In 1878, the organisation became known as the Salvation Army. They adopted a uniform and adapted Christian words to popular tunes sung in the public bars.

William Booth was concerned with drunkenness in East London. In his day, even youngsters were often seen reeling through the streets, and drunkenness was a serious problem.

Booth and his band, called at first "The Christian Mission" tried to reach these people with the Gospel of Christ. Thus, he went into the streets with his message and suffered considerable opposition and hostility. Many early Salvationists were injured by mobs.

Some of the converts of these efforts were so notoiously "bad" that the churches of that time did not want them in the congregations. Thus, the Salvation Army was born as a church to take these people in and to nurture them with the Word of God. The Army is a world-wide church today.

In addressing drunkenness, Booth thought that those who sought deliverance should be gotten out of the city and taken to the country. There they would receive good food and honest work and be given a program of recovery from alcoholic addiction.

At the present time, the Army has various ARC's (Adult Rrehabilitation Centers) where men and women who suffer from addiction to alcohol or durgs can get spiritual and practical help. They receive good care and fine food, and they do practical work such as sorting out the various items that are given to the Army for resale in their stores. The profits of these stores go to support the work of the Army in rehabilitating addicts.

The success rate of these ARC's is something over 80%. This is a considerably higher rate than some other methods of rehabilitating drunkards or drug addicts. It is the spritual aspect of the program which produces better results.

From 13 years and up parents should realize that children can understand more than you think if you take the time to explain what has happened between you and your partner. You may think some things are too personal, but, if you really look around kids today are maturing at a much faster rate than we use to 20 - 40 years ago. Kids are falling in and out of love from 12 up and if you read this board you will see how many pregnant teens (12 up) there are. If both parents just fall out of love then both parents should sit down with the teen and tell them. If mother or father has fallen in love with someone else this too should be explained to the teen, but made clear they had nothing to do with it and it's between mom and dad. Always be sure to tell the teen the truth that you both love him/her no matter what. As much as it can hurt one or the other mate they should NEVER use the children to get back at each other and should come to some agreeable compromise. One or the other of the mates should never put down the other and keep their true feelings to themselves. Often young male teens feel a need to protect their mother if she is the one hurting the most. It takes time for a teen to come to grips with this and they feel like their world is falling apart. You have to both reassure the teen that not much has changed (and mean it) with the exception you won't be living together. That the teen can spend so much time with both of you and if there are family weddings, etc., then the two partners should be able to get along for the sake of the teen. If drugs or every day arguing or abuse or even the fact one of the parents is gay is a factor in the marriage then this truth should be told to the teen as well (they probably already know.
