How old is a Arsene-Zoe lecomte alto saxophone?

LeComte produced SaxHorns under license to Adolf Sax beginning in 1860 (probably beginning with serial number 1000)

Sax's saxophone patents ran out in 1866. LeComte probably began production of a line of alto saxes in late 1866 or early 1867 with serial numbers intermixed with the SaxHorns beginning around 1700. This model has dual octave keys and only plays down to low "B".

It is nearly identical to the Sax alto saxophone of the period, with the exception of the post arrangements and a few key arms modified as a result. LeComte introduced posts mounted on left and right hand ribs -- probably to speed production times. Adolph Sax altos have posts mounted on the body, frequently attached with rivets through the body. Most of the keys, ferrules, key guards, tone holes, and posts appear to be identical to Sax's. Even the hand engraving appears to have been done by the same person.

This model was produced through 1888 (serial numbers around 8000) when LeComte introduced the single octave key mechanism and the right hand spatula keys with rollers. This improved model was continued by Cousnon.

Why do clarinets and saxophones transpose?

Im not sure if you meant 'why' or how' do clarinets and saxophones transpose. For the sake of logic, I will assume "How do clarinets and Saxophones transpose" as the alternative does not make sense to me.

Well, quite simply, from a clarinet to a Tenor or Soprano Saxophone, there is NO transposing needed as the Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone and Soprano Saxophone are all Bb (B Flat) instruments (which means that a C on the Clarinet will sound the same as a C on those 2 saxes). However, for the Alto and Baritone saxophones, you will need to transpose, as Alto and Baritone are Eb (E Flat) instruments.

One thing to note is that a Clarinet has a Register Key, while a Saxophone has an Octave Key. The register key raises the pitch of a clarinet by a 12th (19 semitones) while the Octave key raises by an octave, or 8th (12 semitones). Just something to consider when making the transition :)

Should beginners buy student or pro alto sax?

Good student saxes are made to stand up to some abuse and are less likely to get knocked out of adjustment. You can't beat one to death, but with reasonable care they hold up well. Student models are also less expensive, which makes it a less risky investment if a student decides not to stick with it. To save cost and achieve the extra sturdiness, there is some sacrifice in tone quality, intonation and response in fast passages, but those are not primary concerns for the first several years. For those reasons, most beginners will be better served with a good student model instrument.

The very cheap models make all of the sacrifices in tone quality, intonation and response, but are not sturdy. Many arrive from the factory with serious leaks and other flaws, and it may be very difficult, if not impossible, to make them play well. Always talk with a knowledgable teacher or other expert to find out what quality student models are available in your area.

Professional models are designed with an emphasis on good intonation, excellent tone and lightening fast response. To accomplish this, the very best materials are used, and mechanisms are balanced delicately, requiring that their players be more careful in handling the instrument. The better materials and careful adjustment are very expensive, driving up the cost of pro saxes. For an accomplished player, it's well worth the cost, but most beginners wouldn't know the difference

How do you get rid of metallic smell on saxophone?

That funky smell in your sax case is coming from more than just the jazz you play. Over time, most instrument cases develop an odor that needs to be dealt with. Try these steps: 1. Remove all items from the case and scrub the case with a dry brush and then vacuum well. A fingernail scrub brush or something similar will work well to loosen the grime that can build up on the case lining over time, and then use a small attachment on your vacuum cleaner hose to be sure to get it all out. You don't want that gunk to end up in your pads. You can always leave the case open for a few days or give the case a light spritz with some fabreeze or Lysol and let it dry (very important). Do not spray your sax with these products. 2. Thoroughly clean and disinfect your mouthpiece in slightly warm (NOT HOT) water with a mild soap and some mouthpiece disinfectant or rubbing alcohol. Especially if you're a player who is still in school and you don't rinse out your mouth before you play. (EEEWWWW) your leftover lunch is probably growing some science experiment in your mouthpiece. HOWEVER NEVER EVER get any other part of your saxophone wet. 3. Polish the metal parts of the instrument with a cloth treated especially for lacquered instruments. (or the specific metal of your sax if you have something more custom). You can get these cloths at music supply stores or online by looking up "instrument polishing cloths, lacquer". If you are really getting a lot of that funky cheap jewelry metal smell, be sure to wipe down the inside as well. As long as you don't get it on the pads, you could use small amounts of any product approved for lacquered brass polishing on a soft cloth on your sax. Put a tiny bit on the cloth, apply to the horn in a small circular motion, and wipe off in the same way. There used to be a product called Brasso sold in the supermarket near the dish soap aisle. 4. EVERY time you play, wipe out the spit and all the fingerprints. Any acid left from your body will deteriorate the metal on the sax, contributing to the smell. Good luck, amd may all your future funkiness be from cool jazz. :)

Why would anyone use a high strength reed since they're more difficult to play with?

Woodwind players use a stiffer reed for much the same reason guitar players often user thicker gauge strings: Energy out = energy in. Though they demand 'more' from the musician, the resulting tone is often more robust. Beginning players are typically best served by thinner reeds until they develop a strong embouchure (they have a difficult-enough challenge as it is.) Once the necessary muscles develop, they typically migrate to heavier reeds to achieve improved tone.

Who played saxophone on hungry eyes?

On the actual recording it’s doesn’t seem to be stated online, but I have a feeling it may be Tim Capello, who people will know most from The Lost Boys Movie (which was released the same year as Dirty Dancing in 1987) and also working extensively with Tina Turner.

I just saw in an interview that he worked with Eric Carmen. Strange that he wouldn’t be mentioned, but it would make so the most sense.
