Actually-- Top Gear relaunched in 2002. The show originally began in 1977 and was quite boring. The new show relaunched as a car show and was an absolute hit.

He used to write articles for the Autocar magazine and apparently he hated his job, so in 1992 he put in a subliminal message in the end of year book. Every car review started with a Large red letter in bold, and so what he did was start each review with a certain letter so that it would make a sentence.
It read out "So you think its really good yeah, you should try making the bloody thing up its a real pain in the arse"
...He was fired the very next day...
