(1.75 x 10^5) ÷ (1 3/4 x 10^6) = (1.75 x 10^5) ÷ ((1 + 3 ÷ 4) x 10^6) = (1.75 x 10^5) ÷ (1.75 x 10^6) = (1.75 ÷ 1.75) x 10^(5-6) = 1 x 10^-1 = 10^-1 = 1/(10^1) = 1/10 = 0.1
Why judges use scientific notation?
I think it is Scientists that use scientific notation. It makes the calculation of numbers much easier, particularly if there are several numbers.
Consider 312 x 3012 x 2043004 x 17 =? becomes [and check my math]
3.12x102 x 3.012x103 x 2.043004x106 x 1.7x101 = ?
Now multiply the small (decimal) numbers, and add the powers to get the answer.
3.12 x 3.012 x 2.043004 x 1.7 x 1012. = 3.263831x101x1012 = 3.263831x1013.
That's a lot easier than trying to manipulate all those zeroes on the page!
