You use the activity series to compare the reactivity of different metals in order to predict whether a replacement reaction will occur. A metal that is above another metal in the series will replace that metal in a compound.
Why is it neccessry to reduce the chromosome number of gametes but not other cells of an organism?
Gametes are sperm and egg cells. When the sperm fertilizes the egg, their genetic material is joined to form a new cell called a zygote. How did Alexander Fleming find out about microbes?
Alexander Fleming made his discoveries quite by accident. Fleming was an untidy worker, and during the summer of 1828 he went away for a holiday, but left a clutter of plates growing various bacteria lying about his desk. When he returned, whilst working on an influenza virus he noticed that mould had developed accidentally on a staphylococcus culture plate, and that the mould had created a bacteria-free circle around itself. Further experimentation proved that even a weaker-strength mould culture prevented growth of staphylococci. Thus, Fleming initiated the development and practice of antibiotic therapy for infectious diseases.
