The answer is Herpes Zoster/Shingles.

Herpes zoster is derived from the Latin word for "Belt" and describes the pattern of the rash that usually occurs in this viral infection. The shingles rash is often preceded by a painful burning sensation-known as paresthesia (pins & needles), in the affected dermatome (area of skin served by a specific spinal nerve)

The Shingles rash initially develops as papules (small, raised spots which besocms vesicles (fluid filled blisters)

  • Three to Seven days after the blisters form they begin to scab. Untouched, the scabs will separate and drop off in 14 days. Do not pull or scratch off-scab-scar.

Most times- the lesions will usually affect only one dermatome (the area supplied by one cutaneous nerve)

Post herpertic neuralgia (PHN) pain occurring after the rash has disappeared-may persist for some months, is especially in older patients and is often difficult to control.

The location of the Herpes lesions will determine the nerve involvement.

If the pain or numbness is on the "inside" of the arm and hand (the "pinkie" finger side), then it is ulnar in origin. If the symptoms appear on the "outside" of the hand and arm (the thumb side) then the nerve involved is the radial.

How do shingles make you feel?

I thought that I had been bitten or come in contact with poison ivy or something, turned out to be shingles, in the week leading up to the rash, I had flu like symptoms, racked with pain all over. Felt like my shins were going to break if I walked. When the rash surfaced (in my left hand which doctor said was rare) for two days I could not use my left arm, so painful outside and inside. Many headaches and feeling weak, food taste funny. It is 7 days since rash appeared (feeling bad for a little over 18 days now) and I feel better, I can see scales starting to cover the rash and the yellowish dots that form in rash seem to be gone. I am going to tell my self this was a minor case, it is not coming back and learn of ways to cope with stress. I do beleive stress is the #1 reason why people get sick, why some people end up with cancer while others don't. I know I need a few more days (hopefully) to recover as when I get up and move around I feel wiped out. So hopefully a few days is all it will take and not these horror stories of having it for the rest of your life. Average age for shingles is 60, I am 42, I thought a young 42 but not so sure anymore, last few months just got over vertigo....crazy..... oh ya I kept my rash open to the air as much as I could but my son and husband have not had chicken pox so it was covered during the day, slept in different room and stopped preapring food.....just in case......

Are chickenpox vaccine and shingles vaccine the same?

In a way, it is. When a person is infected with the varicella zoster virus, the resulting illness is chickenpox. The virus does not leave the body and remains dormant in nerve cells and is later reactivated in about a third of people. Usually this is reactivation associated with a weakening of the immune system, and the symptoms are different from those of the first illness. It is extremely painful, as the nerve endings become inflamed and a rash is present. These symptoms are usually localized, unlike chickenpox which is general.
