The Northstar Ski Resort is located on the edge of Lake Tahoe in Placer County n California. It is only about 200 miles from the San Francisco Bay area and on tripadvisor it is a highly rated resort.

Skiing is so expensive because you have to buy skis, boots and poles, which easily add up to over $1000, you have to buy all the clothes, base layer, mid layer, jacketsnow pants, ski socks, gloves, neck warmer/scarf/balaclava, goggles, helmet and a toque (a beanie). All this is mandatory for an enjoyable and, for the most part, a not painful experience. Also you need to get a lift ticket or seasons pass and if you want to eat you need to buy food. The lift tickets are so expensive because at the larger ski resorts they will often have thousands of acres to groom and they need to employ staff and run the lifts which is quite expensive. It is an extremely expensive sport but in my opinion it is well worth it.

It depends on your activity level and balance sport history. if your strait off the couch than expect it to hurt! And it depends on what level of snowboarding you plan to do.
