Yes. Ski wax isn't magic, it's just wax and you can use pretty much any wax, though it it may not work as well. I've used turtle wax on by snowboard many times. I'll generally rub some turtle wax on my board before I snowboard and it works well. I have a snowboard that hasn't been waxed in ten years and I waxed it with turtle wax and it worked great.Before I tutrle waxed it it was totally unridable, ice and snow immediately clung to the board but6 after the turtle was I was able to ride for the rest of the day without trouble. It doesn't work as well as specially formulated wax, but it helps to protect the wax on your board and extend the life of the wax job.

You can ski year -round in the USA if you are willing to hike and "earn your turns." If you are referring to lift-served skiing on groomed trails, Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, OR provides lift served skiing right up to Labor Day. They close in September, but not because of lack of snow, but rather a lack of skiers. It also give them an opportunity to perform certain maintenance tasks that are usually done in the off-season. Other areas offer late season skiing into early summer. Arapahoe Basin in Colorado has been known to remain open until July 4th, and Mt. Bailey snowcat skiing in Southern Oregon will also remain open until July following winters with deep snow. In the eastern USA, hike-to terrain on Mt. Washington, NH usually permits skiing well into June, and some hardy souls have made turns on ice that has lingered into July. Lift served skiing in the east is sometimes available into early May at Bretton Woods resort in NH. Skiing will soon be available year-round, indoors at the New Jersey Meadowlands Xanadu complex. If it's swimming versus downhill, that would be swimming. However, if it's swimming versus cross country, easily, cross country.

What muscles do you need most for cross country skiing? All of them. Swimming neglects the calf and extensor (forearm) muscles, regardless of swimming style. In cross country skiing both your calves and forearms will get a workout, and the only part of the body not worked is the neck. However cross country skiing involves every single muscle in the human body.
