I have seen a 14 inch softball and I think they use that in slowpitch In adult recreational leagues, women use an 11 inch ball and men use a 12 inch ball. In colder climates (Chicago, in particular) has leagues that use a 16 inch ball and no gloves during the winter.

There are tons of rules, many I don't even know and I am a pitcher. I have been called on these:

The play is over only when the pitcher has the ball on the mound in the circle.

You cannot start a pitch then stop.

You cannot throw the ball into your glove when on the mound, some umpires believe this looks like you are trying to pitch.

You cannot alter the ball in any way- this includes rubbing it in the dirt.

You cannot start your pitch in front of the rubber.

When a batter is hit with the pitch, he/she automatically gets to go to first.

First off it is not always about velocity. Understanding location. having movement and changing speeds is equally if not more important when playing high school ball or any level ball for that fact. Having said that, as a trainer of pitchers it is equally important that you have the proper mechanics that will allow you to throw more than a couple innings and maintain both movement and location. But if you are looking for an answer on velocity, I have trained 12 year olds that throw in the upper 60 low 70s and I have trained very dominate pitchers who are 15 and 16 who throw in the mid 70s and low 70s but have great plate presence and an off speed pitch that makes their fast ball seem like it is 10 miles an hour fast than it is.

If I can give you one piece of advice, Learn how to throw the pitch you need that gets the result you want. If that is a ground ball to short or a pop up to the infield than that is when you become a pitcher. Strike outs happen, inning ending double plays are created. If you learn this, you will be successful as a pitcher.

In 18 U Gold softball and collegiate softball, the distance from the plate to the pitching mound is 43 feet. No...If the softball was pitched from a distance of 43 feet it is equivalent to a ball thrown just over 95 mph from a distance of 60' 6" which is the pitching distance in major league baseball. If the 68 mph pitch was thrown from 40 feet then it is equal to a 102 plus mph pitch at 60 feet 6 inches. Because speed is the relevance of time and distance then a ball thrown from 2 different distances and takes the same amount of time to travel each distance means the further of which will have to travel faster to cover more distance.

It is 60 feet from home to first on a softball field. It is the same distance between all the bases. The pitcher's mound is 40 to 43 feet way depending on the level of competition. The depth of the outfield varies from field to field.

There are some old movies about softball and baseball but you just have to look for them

A "pickle" in softball is when a runner is trapped in between two defensive players throwing the ball back and forth. The most common pickle occurs at home plate when a runner tries to steal home. The catcher will throw to the third baseman and she will then throw it back to the catcher. Honestly, the only way for the runner to end up being safe when in a pickle is if one of the defensive players drops the ball.
