Sound Cards

Sound cards are devices used to output sound from a computer, and to capture it from a microphone or other device.

310 Questions

You are having problems with your sound card and you want to remove it Where does it be and how can you remove it?

A sound card can either be integrated into the motherboard, or in one of the expansion slots. If it is integrated into the motherboard, it cannot be removed, but it can usually be disabled in the BIOS. If it is in an expansion slot, you need to remove the cover of the case, and remove a single screw that holds it in place, and then pull it out.

Why is a sound card an input and output device?

Because it outputs sound to speakers or headphones, but takes in sound through a microphone or other auxiliary source, if you have one.

Which sound card does vaio use?

Where can you download a Windows 7 driver for a Creative SoundBlaster 5.1?

Creative has manufactured many 5.1 channel SoundBlaster cards; it would be impossible to identify exactly which one you are requesting a driver for based on the information you have given. Drivers for Creative sound cards can be downloaded off of their support site at the link below. If you have a notably older card, such as the Live! Platinum 5.1, these are no longer officially supported. However, the 2000/XP driver should still work on Windows 7.

How do you know if your sound card complies with pci compliance standards?

There are 12 rules that must be met in order to ensure compliance. These range from encryption to network security. These are the bare minimum standards. Your first priority should always be to protect customer data. So if your sound card does this, then you should not have any problems meeting the PCI compliance standards.

What sound cards fit a Windows 98 AMD case for HP?

As long as the motherboard has an open pci slot, any sound card will fit. You might want to double check though before you buy the card to see if windows 98 drivers are there, otherwise you will put it in and it wont make any sound, and that's not good.

What is bulk in sound cards?

The asker likely means built-in sound cards. Sound cards are either discrete peripheral boards or built onto the motherboard. So if the sound card is built-in, then you don't have to add one. Nearly all modern PCs have integrated sound these days, and about the only reasons to add an additional one would be if the one on the motherboard quit working or you want professional studio quality.

What are the icons used on sound card jacks?

Most sound cards, or built-in motherboard sound chips, have color coded jack plug sockets. Here is a general list of what each one is for:

 • Pink = Microphone In (mono)
 • Blue = Line-In (stereo)
 • Green = Line-Out / Front Speakers / Headphones
 • Orange = Center Speaker and Subwoofer
 • Black = Rear Surround Speakers (5.1, 7.1 systems)
 • Grey = Mid Surround Speakers (7.1 systems)

Not all sound cards have all of the jacks shown above. Additional jacks are provided to connect surround sound speakers. Also note that colors may vary between different sound card manufacturers. For example, M-Audio sometimes use Black for Microphone connection and Pink for 7.1 Rear Surround. If in doubt you should refer to your sound card user manual or manufacturers web site.

On my PC, the corresponding symbols are:

Pink: a microphone

Green: right pointing horizontal arrow with 3 semi-circles open on the left, looks like --)))-->

Blue: right pointing horizontal arrow with 3 semi-circles open on the right, looks like --(((-->

Black: horizontal arrows pointing in both directions with two pairs of semi-circle, looks like <--(((-)))-->

I don't have orange or grey jacks.

I do have a Yellow jack, which has a symbol which is a 90 degree rotation of the black one above.

Do you need a new sound card if your computer speakers sound comes out all distorted and its a new monitor?

No. Try this:

1. Maybe you connected the soundcard's headphone output to your monitor. Try another output! Headphone output levels are too high for anything but headphones.

2. Put down the output volume. On the right side of the taskbar there is a "loudspeaker" symbol. Click this and put the volume down.

3. Depending on your soundcard try the "system device" settings for "audio- video- and game controller". Click around the rider, sometimes there are settings to configure wheter you have 2 or more speakers, headphones or computer monitor connected.

Does the Intel Pentium III processor have a DirectX or higher sound card and graphics card?

To answer your question, we have to first separate the definition of a Processor.

The CPU or Central Processing Unit is the main brain of the computer.

GPU or Graphic Processing Unit is the main brain on the Graphic card, separate from the CPU

A soundcard is again a separate sound CODEC chip integrated on a motherboard or on a separate PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and it also is separate from the CPU.

Now, a computer that has a graphics card and soundcard that uses a Pentium 3 CPU are normally supported by DirectX. So long as the manufacturer has submitted the drivers to Microsoft for WHQL certification (Windows Hardware Quality Libs) They will be supported by all DirectX drivers from that version to which they were submited for, to current versions of DX (9c) DirectX drivers are extentions of the writen drivers for the respective add on cards so that the hardware has a clean line, if you will, to the CPU. The added benifit of DX certified drivers is a smoother itegration and operation of your PC. (Personal Computer)

Having said all this, let me specify that there are better definitions to the DX drivers, but not knowing your level of understanding, I felt this was the easiest way to explain.

NOW.....Before you buy a game, or want to add some other software that relies on the DX extentions, you will need to check with the Manufactures of the add on cards to make sure if they are WHQL certified. They will be the best source for newer drivers if the ones you have aren't up to date.

What is a good sound card for 0 latency midi instrument playing?

RME cards or M-Audio Audiophile. RME is more expensive and if you have the money go for these, but audiophile is low latency too and will do the job.

The sound suddenly quit working on my Dell pc. Do I need a new sound card?

Try reinstalling the driver first. Go to 'my computer'===>system information(on my computer, this option is in the side panel)====> Click the tab marked 'Hardware'===>Click 'Device Manager'===> Click 'Sound, video and game controllers' Look for an option that has something to do with sound. Click the option 'Unistall driver' After the driver is uninstalled, turn off your computer and restart it. After you restart it, you will get a message that your computer has found new hardware. Your computer will reinstall the driver automatically. If this doesn't work, you might need to get a new sound card. Hope this helps. Try reinstalling the driver first. I'm assuming you are using XP. If you vista or some other operating system, I don't know if this will work. I only know that it works with XP. If you bought your computer before February of last year, but with in the last couple of years, you probably have XP. 1Go to my computer 2Click the link marked system properties. On the computer I have, this is in the side panel. 3 Click the tab marked hardware 4 Click 'Device Manager' 5 Click 'Sound, video and game controllers' 6 Click the tab that says something about sound. There may be more than one. Some of them can't be uninstalled. Just look through the devices until you find the one that can be uninstalled. On my computer, it is labeled 'Realtek AC'97 Audio. Yours will probably say something different since you have a Dell. 7 Click 'Uninstall' 8 After uninstalling, turn off your computer and then turn it back on. 9 when you turn your computer back on, you will get a message that says your computer has found new hardware. The driver will be reinstalled automatically. If you still don't have sound after this, then you might think about getting a new sound card.

Where can you download sigmatel high definition audio codec?

Dell houses a lot of the SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec Drivers. But one thing you must understand about these is that SigmaTel releases drivers on a per-manufacturer basis. Meaning Dell, Alienware, Gateway, HP, whoever you bought your PC off of has "control" over what driver (and version) you install, even down to the PC-model. You're supposed to go to said manufacturer (in my case, Dell) for "current" drivers.

The quotes are on purpose, as the correct audio drivers for my Inspiron E1505 are lacking quality when it comes to running Vista on it (crackles, stuttering). So I nabbed the newest version of the driver specifically made for newer versions of the Inspiron platform. Better performance and it works just the same.

If you're not looking for the manufacturer recommended audio drivers for your current hardware, proceed with a bit of caution when installing newer unapproved-drivers for hopeful improvements. It may or may not always work (it may even be worse)... don't fret though, worst that would happen is you'd have to uninstall it and reinstall the correct driver version with a few annoying reboots. Your machine will NOT blow up into a million pieces due to incompatible installed-drivers. Enjoy.

I posted a link to a search of Dell's Support Downloads for SigmaTel Audio drivers. Should be listed by date for easy picking of the current version. I went with version "v.6.10.0.5614, A09."

Hope this helps.

Would a powered USB extension cable cause issues or improve a USB microphone when trying to record high quality audio?

As in any live recording applications, the more length you add to cables, the more noise that cable tends to pick up. Try to keep cable lengths to a minimum. If that is not possible, give it a shot and see how the recording sounds. You may want to try an XLR microphone application as XLR cable are shielded to reject unwanted noise*.

*XLR cables may still pick up unwanted noise when running them at long lengths.

Where can you download e system 3083 sound card?
a sound card cannot be downloaded, it is a plastic card that comes in a box that needs to be removed and inserted into a special slot inside the computer case
This is not true, a sound card is a downloadable item, also known as a 'sound driver'.

Copy that into your address bar and hit enter. Click on the link that says 'AC97 Audio.zip'and your download will start. Click 'Open' or 'Run' when prompted. follow the instructions on the first link i gave you.

Just to be clear, a sound card and a sound driver are not the same thing. A sound card is a physical, tangible piece of plastic and metal while a sound driver is a piece of virtual software. Apparently, what you are looking for is a sound "driver" which means it can be downloaded.
