What are opinions on the Asus X800XL PCIE graphics card?

Fast 3D performance Very good 2D quality Decent video capture quality Dual DVI Slightly costlier Massive box Poor TV-out quality Weak overclocking (our sample anyway) This was a very nice card to play with, and shows that the x800XL cards are the sweet spot for ATi cards right now. Asus has done well, but there is nothing included that justifies the price difference between it and similarly equipped cards. If you find this info useful please vote!!!

Is there a way to send sound from your laptop to another computer without using the sound card on your laptop like over a network or usb the laptop has Windows 7 home Other computer windows xp?

Yes - you can send the sound file as an attachment to an email, or copy it to a USB drive and transfer it onto the other computer that way. Neither of these methods utilise the sound card.

Could somebody explain why some earphone like shure is able to deliever heavy and vibrating bass while plug in to computer sound card but distorted bass while plug in to iPod or creative Zen?

Just a theory, your milage may vary.

Do these headphones use a battery? If so they are active headphones and the battery is used to amplify the signal to provide better response. This may not be a problem on the laptop which outputs a lower amperage signal (intended to be used with plugin speakers) but may be over-driving the signal and causing clipping when plugged into your ipod or zen which may be outputting a higher amperage signal (intended to be used with passive (non-active) headphones).

If this is your issue, you may dig through your ipod or zens settings, it may have a configuration for active headphones. Using the headphones without the battery installed may also result in better performance.

Does the Alesis Master Control still require a sound card such as RME etc?

I don't believe so. I own it and run it on a PC with a sound card but I had to disable it in order to run the device without conflicts. It now functions as my sound card. I haven't tried the device with the sound card enabled but I can imagine some kind of issue arising when using WMP or any other program that plays audio. Just disable the sound card and you should be fine.

Is a sound card an input or an output device?

A sound-card is an output device. It takes digital information from the computer and turns it into an analogue signal that is sent to the computers speakers or headphone socket.

Most sound cards today also have a microphone socket and convert sound to digital signals for processing (eg for SKYPE or recording music). This is an Input device.

Some sound cards can only process either In or Out, not both at the same time, most modern cards can do both simultaneously - a requirement for SKYPE usage.

How long does a sound card last?

Indefinitely. In normal operation, they will outlast the useful life of the computer they are installed in.

If your Dell laptop has a headphones jack but no line-out jack can you still connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system to it?

You can connect the 5.1 speaker system to the dell laptop as long as the cable is not an optical or digital cable. Some cables double analog or digital. These you can use. You should be able to plug them in if the connector fits. You may not have sound out of all of your speakers but you can still try. If the plug will fit then nothing can be hurt. If it does not work you might try getting an external usb sound card(e.g. soundblaster mp3) I hope that answers your question.

How does a sound card damaged?

Suppose you want to add a legacy sound to your system that uses IRQ 5 what if anything is currently using this resource?

IRQ 5 is normally a free interrupt unless you have a second parallel port installed. If the interrupt is currently in use by another resource, you could reassign the IRQ that one of the conflicting resources is using to a less commonly used interrupt such as 10, 11, or 12.

Why do you make a louder noise by hitting something harder?

More energy in, more energy out. Hitting something harder means that you are applying more energy in the 'hit'. Sound waves are a form of energy. So your hit might produce only louder sound, or you might break the object. Either way, the energy you put into the system comes out as sound and/or a broken object and/or some degree of heat.

Typical sockets on a sound card include Speaker, Microphone, line-in, line-out, and perhaps others. When used for surround sound, the jacks may take on different roles and thus be for front speakers rear speakers, center speaker, side speakers, subwoofer, etc. Older sound cards also had a joystick socket that could double as a MIDI instrument socket with the right adaptor.
