What does a Spanish dollar look like?

Spain has never used dollars as its currency. Till 2002 it used pesetas and today it uses the euro.

The coins sometimes called "Spanish dollars" were actually 8-reale silver pieces issued from the 15th to the 19th centuries. They were widely used in Spain's North and South American colonies as well as neighboring regions. They were so common in the American colonies that the US silver dollar was made to have essentially the same size and weight so the two coins could co-circulate. These coins were first referred to as "Spanish dollars" in the late 16th century. They also were called "milled dollars", a reference to being mechanically struck.

What were the two main reasons Spain sent expeditions to the Americans?

There were actually THREE main reasons that Spain sent expeditions to the America. In English these are usually summed up as: Gold, God, and Glory.

Gold: There were impressive, untapped natural resources in New World, especially gold and silver, which were extensively mined and brought vast riches. There were numerous other natural resources that abounded in the Americas, such as fish-stocks and lumber (which were mostly depleted in Europe) as well as new foods like the potato, tomato, pepper, maize, sweet potatoes, squashes, etc. that led to a population boom in Europe.

God: Spaniards believed fervently in their God and proselytizing Catholicism. When it was discovered that there were millions of unconverted souls in the New World, Spain invested huge amounts of resources to send missionaries to the New World to bring these people to Catholicism. Similarly, Spain imposed a ban on Muslims and anyone suspected to have Muslim roots (the Moriscos and Berberiscos) from going to the Americas based on the fear that Islam could spread there and create a new set of holy wars just like Spain had just fought in the Reconquista.

Glory: Individual Spaniards could obtain renown or personal wealth by coming to the New World and discovering new areas or civilizations in the New World. This kind of social prestige was incredibly valuable.

When was the Philippines invaded by Spain?

The Islas Filipinas was not a colony of Spain, crazy as it sounds. Thorough material is available in Castilian (Spanish), as well as everything else it's hard to discuss Philippine history in English. Here is some material: http://www.proyectos-saluda.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1779&Itemid=156 In addition, remember that today's archipelago became the Capitanía General de Las Indias Orientales (General Captaincy of East Indies), governing over Guam/Marianas, Carolinas, Palaus, Marquesas, etc etc. It was the seat of power of the Indias Orientales. Just my two cents, email me at alvaro@proyectos-saluda.org, or leave a comment in link above noted. Thanks
