A spider is not an insect (insects have three body parts and six legs). To learn more about spiders look for their following taxonomic classification:
- Kingdom: Metazoa
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Arachnida
- Order: Araneae
It depends on the requirements of the individual species. Remember - you're trying to match their natural environment. This will include suitable substrate, hides big enough to conceal the spider from prying eyes, possibly branches to climb on (arboreal species), a water dish, a heat mat & thermostat (if you cannot match their temperature range naturally)... There are plenty of books available - because tarantula-keeping is becoming more and more popular.
In what land live the sydney funnel web spider?
The Sydney Funnel web Spider (Atrax robustus) is found in in New South Wales on the east coast of Australia, between Newcastle and Nowra and west to Lithgow. They prefer the forested upland areas surrounding the lower, more open country of the central Cumberland Basin. These include the Hornsby Plateau to the north, the foothills of the Blue Mountains to the west, and the Woronora Plateau to the south. Funnel web occurrence is low in much of central western Sydney, and also the sandy coastal parts of the eastern suburbs and the Botany Bay area. They prefer areas of sandy clay, shale or basaltic soils that can retain moisture more effectively.

What type of spider is black hairy and is found living in a wood pile in Ohio?
There are so many spiders of different kinds in Ohio that it would take an entire book to discuss them. There is a book about the Spiders of Connecticut, and it is over an inch thick.
The spiders in Ohio are about the same group as the ones in Connecticut. Generally speaking, in Ohio you could probably find some member of every genus of spider that is found in the U.S. with the exception of the kinds that are limited to the hottest areas of this country such as Florida and the states the border the Gulf of Mexico. That means that you won't find any tarantulas in the wild, nor will you find Huntsman spiders, golden-silk orb weavers, and maybe a few other of the main Families of spiders. The reason is generally going to be that it is too cold in Ohio for some spiders to survive.
There are some kinds of spiders that are found in other parts of the world, but not in the United States. The oceans have kept Eurasian and African species at home. There are also spiders in Australia and New Zealand that are unique to those areas.
What spider has an orange body with a white spot and black cross?

I have had an interesting experience today that could add to this conversation. As a nature photographer, I was in my garden taking photos of Ladybugs.
And it was harassed by quite a few ants. Then a spider showed up covering the body of the Ladybug and the ants just walked away.
The Ladybug remained unharmed, after a while the spider walked away and the Ladybug did too.
So it seems this particular spider was protective of the Ladybug.
