How do you replace the window glass?

This is really one of those jobs best left to the pros. Seriously it costs less than $200 for parts and labor, and it's done in an hour or two. If you try yourself you will take much longer, and will most likely leak. If you are still set on doing it yourself you will need a special wire caulking saw (purchased at an automotive store), and lots of caulking. Remove the trim around the windshield not easy, but do-able. Take the wire and shove one end through the caulking on the existing windshied so that half the wire now is inside the truck, and half is outside. With you on the inside and a friend on the outside saw the wire back and forth until you have traced the entire windshield (carefull if you are trying to save the glass it is easy to break it at this stage). Remove the old glass, and clean all the the old caulking off. Put in new caulking, and install the new glass. It will probably leak. Good luck.

On a local level people can live without electricity. It was done for centuries. Candles, gas lamps, oil lamps, and a fireplace can give light. The fireplace also can be used for cooking and heat. How long ago was stained glass invented?

Probably at the same time that glass itself was invented. The sand from which glass is made naturally contains minerals that will cause the glass to be colored. The earliest glass made was was not clear but strongly colored (often dark, sometimes even nearly opaque).

The first glass makers therefor began working simultaneously in two opposite directions to make various types of glass that they wanted:

  1. Trying to develop ways to remove these minerals from the raw sand or to bleach out the resulting color in the finished glass, in an attempt to produce clearer more transparent glass. Due to the difficulties of completely removing all of these minerals (especially iron based minerals, which produce a brown color in the finished glass) the development of effective bleaching agents to remove these colors from the finished glass. (note: the purple bottles and purple insulators that are now popular on the antiques market were originally a clear transparent glass made using a permanganate bleaching agent to remove the "iron brown" color from the finished glass, after long exposure to ultraviolet light this bleaching agent broke down to manganese compounds that themselves colored the glass purple. Glass makers long ago replaced this bleaching agent with others that do not break down on exposure to ultraviolet light.)
  2. Trying to identify which specific minerals produced which specific colors in the finished glass, in an attempt to produce stained glass of desirable colors.

Why did churches use stain glass windows?

The purpose is not specifically recorded, and has been the subject of much commentary. In my opinion, the purpose was to light the church in a way that was primarily decorative. Rose windows had no pictures or words on them and were purely decorative. You will read that stained glass windows were a way of teaching the Bible to illiterate people, but if you go into a medieval church and look up at the windows, you will see that they pretty much all look alike, and can be distinguished best by the words that were painted and fired onto the glass.

I have provided a link to an article on medieval stained glass below. You can look at the pictures there and decide for yourself whether the idea was more educational or more decorative.

Who invented stain glass windows?

We do not know who invented stained glass, but it was probably invented in western Europe in the Early Middle Ages. Colored glass had been used earlier for various purposes, and colored designs made of substances other than glass had been used in window areas, but we have no record or evidence of stained glass windows.

The earliest known reference to stained glass dates from 675 AD, at which time workers from France are recorded to have been brought to the monastery of St Peter at Monkwearmouth to glaze the windows.
