What are laws of Sudan?

Sudan does not per se have "strange laws", the country is ruled according to Islamic (Sharia) law - which is common in a number of countries.

Some of the rules that non-Sharia countries may find "strange" relate to dress code, which are fairly conservative (although not as strictly implemented as in other Islamic countries). Women for example have to have their hair covered; must wear dresses (and not trousers), these must be ankle length and also cover the neck and wrists. Normally men are also frowned upon if they wear short trousers! Bear in mind that Sudan is on average one of the hottest countries in the world!

Unmarried men and women may not sit together without a chaperon.

Another law (again Sharia) which some may find strange relates to accidents and helping people who may have been injured. Under the law if you stop to assist someone in an accident and he/ she dies while you are trying to help them YOU are held responsible and charged accordingly! This is in total opposition to the "good Samaritan" laws of may other countries. To this end many people will stop and look at an accident, but very seldom offer any assistance.

One I particularly like relates to criminals. if you are convicted of a crime and sentenced to a prison sentence the government only provides you with a new home - how you get food and money in prison is entirely up to your family and friends!

What are some geographical features in Sudan?

¨Sudan is located in north eastern Africa. It borders the Red Sea between Egypt on the north and Eritrea and Ethiopia on the southeast; it borders Chad and the Central African Republic on the west. It is the largest country in Africa.

¨The total area of the country is 2,505,813 square kilometres, with 2,376,000 km² land, and 129,810 km² water. This is slightly larger than one-quarter the size of the United States, one-fifth the size of Europe, and one-third the size of Australia.

¨The Nile is the dominant geographic feature of Sudan, flowing 3,000 kilometres from Uganda in the south to Egypt in the north. Most of the country lies within its catchment basin. The Blue Nile and the White Nile, originating in the Ethiopian highlands and the Central African lakes, respectively, join at Khartoum to form the Nile River proper that flows to Egypt.

¨Northern Sudan, lying between the Egyptian border and Khartoum, has two distinct parts, the desert and the Nile Valley. To the east of the Nile lies the Nubian Desert; to the west, the Libyan Desert. They are similar--stony, with sandy dunes drifting over the landscape. There is virtually no rainfall in these deserts, and in the Nubian Desert there are no oases. In the west there are a few small watering holes where the water table reaches the surface to form wells that provide water for nomads and caravans. Flowing through the desert is the Nile Valley, whose alluvial strip of habitable land is no more than two kilometres wide and whose productivity depends on the annual flood.

Is Sudan mostly rainforest tundra desert or mountains?

The capital of Sudan is Khartoum.

Here is an estimate of what the land contains.

According to wikipedia

1993 estimates:

§ 5% arable land

§ 0% permanent crops

§ 46% permanent pastures

§ 19% forests and woodland

§ 30% other areas

§ 19 460 km² irrigated land

The terrain is generally flat plains, broken by several mountain ranges; in the west the Deriba Caldera (3,042 m/9,980 ft), located in the Murrah Mountains, is the highest point in Sudan; in the east are the Red sea hills.

This is what I found on desert figures Most of the northern half of Sudan is desert or semi-desert and vegetation is limited to scattered xerophytic shrubs such as Acacia ehrenbergiana.

According to Sudan's environmental profile it is still forested across 28.4% of its land- 67,546,000 hectares (which is just under quarter of a million square miles). It is decreasing by a substantial area each year.

I do see there is a contradiction with these figures. It being Africa information is harder to come across, and often conflicts. If you are merely interested, then this might be enough. If not or if it is for a project, have more of a look at the various websites I have listed and others similar. Due to the war torn state of Sudan (both what is now Sudan and South Sudan (ceded a few months ago)) figures are inaccurate and often out of date as it is not considered a high priority till things settle down.
